Were there plans to discontinue it in the near future?

Not sure. Maybe they had plans to stop support when Red Dead Redemption 2 comes out. I think they could still support GTA Online on GTAV when GTAVI comes out.
I don't know what this means. I should really play GTA V more. GTA IV sucked ass but I remember Red Dead having some of the funnest multiplayer ever.
Excellent news. One of the best online games ever. Great to hear they plan to keep supporting it despite it being 4 years old.
Even if you don't care for it, it obviously doesn't take a big team to maintain it. So yeah, makes sense to continue support.

Well, I'm sure hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of people play the game still so of course, they'll continue supporting it. Maybe their original plans expected GTA online to die off after 4 years? Either way, I won't be getting back into GTA Online myself, I'll be waiting for GTA VI.
Great...
Can we just get fucking GTA 6 already? We got GTA3, VC and SA in a matter of three years. Think about that. The entire trilogy... three years. It's been 13 years since SA and we've gotten exactly two titles. It's just insulting.
With the millions upon millions of dollars that kids around the world are spending of their parents' money on in-game currency every week, I don't imagine they'll be shutting it down anytime soon.
Sure would be nice if they invested a little of that money into providing some stability for the online experience though... always seemed odd to me that a team which so consistently puts out incredible games has also made little effort to improve the online experience over the past decade or so. It's a rare day when all of my ps4 friends and I are able to join the same server and remain there without some of us getting dropped immediately.
