I can't agree with this because you would have to judge it by gen and not overall because alot of the older games don't compare well and the fact that some people have played them because they're young.

Such a horrible, horrible list. People should be ashamed of this.
At least Suikoden 2 made it.

None of the Phantasy Star games?? I think there's some serious recency bias in here.

Not sure of any list where Phantasy Star makes a top 20, outside of PSO.

I've never played a JRPG before. Well at least, not really

I played Final Fantasy 7 on the PC and got to the part where Barret goes to his village and then you ride a Choccobo, but the PC controls weren't listed, the PS1 ones were, so you had to randomly guess what the controls were, so I stopped playing.

And then I tried Final Fantasy X and I was like "this is the protagonist...?" and stopped playing

And then I got Final Fantasy XV and got in a car the first time. My. God. The. Fucking. Car. Stopped playing.

So yeah, the Final Fantasy games i don't even consider having played them. Cause I never finished one.

On the other hand I have Nier Automata and Persona 5 which I think will be great introductions to JRPG. I'm playing Persona 5 right now and it's just so fucking good! I'll play Nier later. I was so hyped for these games without knowing anything about them, luckily they're worth the money.

The nerve!!!If you were on my friend list I would unfriend you right away!!!!

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Funny how the most recent hyped game always makes it to the top over at Famitsu.

Kinda like what P5 goes against, ironically.

Makes me sad final fantasy xv is on the list... can't think of a more undeserving title... maybe worst rpg of all time list...

lol you like tititus?

  1. The complete lack of Pokemon and Monster Hunter is kind of shocking. Within Japan, they are the most popular games in recent years, let alone in the RPG genre. And sure, a lot of these people polled are apparently a bit older than Pokemon's fanbase, but you'd think that the first or second gen would get in the Top 20.
  2. I find the lack of Final Fantasy XIII surprising, if only because I've been told repeatedly that the game and characters were popular in Japan.
  3. Dragon Quest is actually less prevalant than I expected. Most notably, the most recent title here is from 1992, not counting its PS2 remake. In contrast, Final Fantasy had six representatives, the oldest from 1994.
  4. I am genuinely surprised that a Western RPG got on this list. No joke.
  5. I kind of get Persona 5 being high up on the list, though I doubt it will remain on top when the next big game rolls around. Nier is a bit more surprising, because it seemed like more of a quiet success and lacked the strong fanbase of the Persona series.
  6. Xenoblade did surprisingly well, given that it honestly isn't that popular.

Frankly, while the list is very strange in places, I cannot be more glad that that series is now likely consigned to oblivion. It's about very few games that I can say that I hate them, but god damn is FFXIII leading my selection by a longshot.

Nier is pretty damn successful in Japan, it has more than 330,000 sales there alone and it shows up on the Japanese charts every week at about 3,000 copies.

Also, Xenoblade is somewhat popular for a triple A JRPG on a *console*. That's a somewhat important distinction to make. Although the Japanese sales are always just around 160,000.
