Super Paper Mario is an awful game…what on earth happened?? Story is a massive step down from TTYD, gameplay is structured/designed to be a 2D platformer w/ easy puzzles scattered about, there exist virtually no personality to the characters beyond a single-line description, etc. It feels Nintendo was trying to make the game as accessible as possible via dumbing down the story and puzzles, restricting gameplay to a 2D perspective, and dropping virtually all combat, and ended up stripping all RPG elements out of the game. Not sure if this “stripping all RPG elements” was intentional (iirc Miyamoto is not a big fan of the label “RPG,” is can be seen — for instance — in his dejection of labeling Zelda as an RPG, and his numerous remarks arguing for “gameplay over story”), but it makes for a complete mess.

edit: i take back a lot of my harsh words. I’m starting to appreciate the game a lot more when not taking the story as seriously as TTYD. It’s a fine game!

It's ok for what it is. Sticker Star and Color Splash are the real disasters in the Paper Mario series.

agreed lol. (im just gonna delete my og comment…after having played some more of it, SPM is a solid entry. I enjoy it, maybe not to the same extent as its predecessors, though enjoying it is certainly better than SS/CS.)
