Forums - Gaming Discussion - Phil Harrison: "Switch Has The Opportunity To Reach A Wider Audience"

I doubt that many Switch buyers who paid $280 or more for it didn't have a 7th or 8th gen home or handheld console.

Lol, he worked at Sony and then MS. Sounds more like he's wanting Nintendo to hire him.

Now, it's true Nintendo focuses more on kids and casuals with their HW design. However, that doesn't always pan out. Or expand the market. Sony is the one that grew the market from one where ALL consoles combined couldn't hit 100M, to one where the market leader always passes that by itself.

Well... i dunno. Nintendo expanded with the Wii but then contracted with the Wii U. I'm not even sure one can say the Switch is expanding anything rather more than trying to unify the portable and console spaces.

Now, i can see where he is coming from. Sure we can say that Nintendo appeal more to casuals and the other two to hardcore. So... here is the problem. Nintendo wants to make a profit on hardware sales, and that audience gives them that and a few first party sales. As Harrison admits, his kids still play Zelda and mario kart, both of wich, i will add are out for the Wii U aswell.
MS and Sony go for the hardcore cause those buy alot of games. They want to sell games. The hardware is sometimes secondary and they are willing to take a loss.

Now what is more valuable in expanding the market? A few costumers that buy the hardware and a couple of games or one gamer that buys the hardware and dozens of games? I am inclined to think that it's the second, and i think that is the angle that MS and Sony are taking and it's not necessarely worse than Nintendo's.

He's so obviously wrong. Nintendo's market is contracting as opposed to expanding.

That's BS.
Nintendos hardware sales have been on a constant decline, while the PS4 will probably sell more than the PS3. Also MS are putting games on the PC which is broadening their brand.

Incorrect. The Wii grew 5X generation over generation, and while Wii U did poorly, the Switch is selling out instantaneously and is already one of the fastest selling consoles in history; it will exceed Wii U LT within a year. Switch is estimated by industry experts to sell at least as well as the Wii.

Its not broadening anything, its the typical handheld crowd buying it with a few extra

Well, he's not entirely wrong. The Switch does appear to have crossover appeal in more ways than one. I'll give 3 examples.
My former boss, who is a die-hard, dedicated, PlayStation gamer, (this guy bought a 4K TV JUST for his PS4 Pro), he was right there in line, right next to me at GameStop, waiting for the clock to strike midnight on March 3rd.

My cousin, who is a die-hard, dedicated, Xbox gamer, has owned all 3 systems, spent all of our trip in Las Vegas trying to find ONE Nintendo Switch. He calls it, "the console of my dreams!"

My older brother, who hasn't been a consistent gamer in YEARS, he hardly ever plays video games anymore. I showed him my Switch, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on it, and he loved it! Now he's trying to save up money so that he can buy one, not just for himself, but for our nephews too.

Of course, only time will tell if that strategy will work, but seeing and hearing stories like mine, his, and GhaudePhaede010's, PLUS the fact that the system is selling out almost everywhere it is stocked, it appears to be working at the moment.

Nice anecdotal evidences. I can give some too - no one I know owns a Switch or ever talked about getting one. And I live in Australia where it is readily available and has already been discounted.

Just like they did with the Wii right? Some people were so sure those non-gamers would convert to being gamers and stick around.

What Nintendo did I compare to breathing into a balloon, it swell and then reverted back to its natural position.

Switch isn't anything like that, Switch is just taking up the handheld market left by the 3DS.

I agree to some extent that Nintendo is offering an unique selection of games where you can invite friends to personally have fun with you, while on PS4/Xbox this is almost non-existent. I had a lot of fun with Mario Kart 8 (Wii U) and Mario Party (emulator) just yesterday with my friends.

HOWEVER, it's too soon to assume that Switch will bring the audience of the Wii back to consoles. It's not even an year old.

Plus, PlayStation is making new kinds of games for all genres, including titles like PlayLink, where you play with your smartphone, and PS VR. They deliver games of quality that are also innovative and are the main responsibles for the success of the industry, just see the sales. Nintendo had success with Wii and 3DS, and failed everything else.

3DS, Wii, PSP, Vita, PS2, PS3, PS4 & Steam.

This guy is still alive ?
