The tax includes juice? Are you sure, spurge? Cause that sounds ridiculous if true. Juice is expensive enough as it is.

Generally these taxes have affected any drink with added sugar in them.

So any juice with added sweetner, even 0 calorie sweetereners, get hit with this tax. So cranberry juice would get hit given that generally has added sugar. But it also adds a tax to milk alternitives like soy milk.

Its just a bullshit way to raise tax revenue and will have zero impact on public health. Its a scam left wing cities keep falling for.

0 calorie sweeteners aren't 0 calorie though haha. Take Splenda for instance, it has just as much calories per gram (or per pound or whatever unit you want to use) as normal sugar.

I'm guessing the goal of the bill is to fight obesity. Although maybe if the government would stop subsidizing corn production for corn-syrup, that would make a real difference. Alas...

It's better than nothing.

I feel it is more about money and less about obesity. If that were the case everyone on food stamps would not be immune from this huge tax. Just think of what a case of drink mix is going to cost. One penny for every ounce that it says it can make.

Drink refills at the restaurant are now taxed as well.

This will not stop obesity, but it will make many who are barely not on food stamps, be on food stamps or start to go hungry.

Unless those people start to eat healthy correct? Then they wont have to pay the extra tax? I'd more 100% for this if the money they made from the taxes went into some sort of medicaid program.

Not true. A lot of people have quit smoking because of how expensive it' gotten.

No, they quit because its unhealthy. I know people who still smoke, despite the expense (my father unfortunately) because it is just so hard to quit.

There are many reasons why people quit and the cost is one of them this is a fact. How common it is compared to other reasons is another argument but this is a reason that has been used for people to quit.

If you save 5$ every day for 45 years at 3% interest you will end up with 170000$ saved -- two very good houses in rural America.

If you save 10$ every day for 45 years at 3% interest you will end up with 325000$ saved -- five good houses in rural America.

Many pople have smoked away houses through their petty addictions.

Let's tax fruit, too.

I wonder what statistics actually show. Anecdotes are meaningless.

There we go- if you're diabetic, then you aren't super healthy.

The US has a huge issue with obesity. Michelle tried reforming school lunches, they kept pushing exercise everywhere, and now we see fat tax. What else can we do? The food industry obviously won't help- it'll only make it worse. After all, many industries paid scientists to fabricate studies in their favour. It's why people avoid fats but are fine with eating sugar, grains, dairy, and red meat to their graves

I feel bad for people like you. Diabetes isn't fun for anyone. Trust me, having relatives with it lets me know they cannot control it. However, is soda the only efficient way to solve your sugar issue? My cousin uses lollipops or candy typically

What the actual fuck....

I have Type 1 Diabetes, it effectively has/had nothing to do with being unhealthy to develope it and most certainly had nothing to do with drinking soda

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabetes_mellitus_type_1

It's an auto immune disorder, my white blood cells destroyed the insulin producing cells in my pancreas because they accidentally identified them as a threat to my body.

Type 2 is where the body makes insulin but you are basically too poorly and large for that amount of insulin to be enough for you, type 1 is a different thing... it's pretty much a different condition, hate that they share a name, but yeah, I'm not overweight and most certainly not... unhealthy.

Not every diabetic person is overweight. Not every overweight person is diabetic.

However, the statistics that I recall from studying obesity/type 2 correlation does show that many people with type 2 are also obese. http://asmbs.org/resources/weight-and-type-2-diabetes-after-bariatric-surgery-fact-sheet

I'm sorry for mistaking type 1 with type 2. That was a terrible mistake, but I assure you I'm not trying to paint you as some obese diabetic.

Because less YOUNGER people are starting in the first place. There are many other things that can be smoked besides cigarrettes these days. Fact is, not nearly as many older people are actually quitting.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

As someone who is 6ft 1in, myself and the BMI scale don't perfectly see eye to eye, especially since I'm muscular !! but yeah it most certainly does not put me in any of the bad categories still, love me a nice healthy jog or session of weights far more than most people :) sorry... I didn't mean to trigger and I'm aware I was like.... "fuck off" with my first post, but yeah it would be like if there was a new version form of obesity which they named something something cancer, and then when people were diagnosed with traditional cancer someone consoled them by saying "I'm sorry you got fat and cancer'y"

Main difference I guess is that T2 can be controlled with diet and exercise (ie stop eating and go walking) but Type 1 if I don't take my 4/5 injections per day, I'll die by the end of the week, simple as that. Always wondered if I asked to not receive treatment for it and didn't take injections... would a doctor force them into me when I passed into a coma or would I be allowed to die... this took a turn for the dark but such is life when it comes to a thread about taking sugar out of a drink to make people smarter, it's like taking matches off fully grown adults, there is a point where you have to just suck it up, and say those fucktards are just going to keep burning themselves, they will have to learn that matches burn their fingers and drinking sugar unless you need energy++++ is bad for you.

You raise a good point. Adults are adults; not sure if many are willing to just give up on the spot.
