I am Iron Man
Salt and Sanctuary (PS4)
Side scrolling love child between Symphony of the Night and Dark Souls. Offers local 2-player co-op via a Sellsword merchant. Can be accessed from the beginning of the game should you choose the Stone Sellsword as your starting gift.
Hyper-Light Drifter (PS4)
Another Souls-like, though this one is more Link to the Past than Symphony of the Night. Offers 2-player co-op from the get-go via the start menu. Be warned, accessing Player Two consumes some of Player One's HP.
Rocket League (PS4)
Need I say more? This game is fairly well known, but it's car soccer with local co-op and head-to-head.
Broforce (PS4)
Side scrolling schmup that utilizes a number of unique action movie star parodies. Has 4-player co-op, and is absolute madness in full swing.
Guacamelee (PS4)
A surprisingly fresh take on Metroidvania, Guacamelee is funny while still taking itself 85% seriously. Two player co-op from the start via the start menu.

Pokemon, when it comes out on Switch. My wife and I played D/P and X/Y together.
One game we both enjoyed wasn't a MP game, though: Dragon Quest VIII.

PS4: Helldivers, Broforce, Towerfall, Trine 2, Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil: Revelations 2, Lego The Hobbit, Rocket League
Switch: NBA Playgrounds, Snipperclips, Blaster Master Zero (this is more of a SMG-type co-op mode), Mario Kart 8
Some of these are better than others.
Good luck!
Mariokart, Deluxe (Switch)
Dead Nation (PS4)
Alienation (PS4)
Knack 2 (PS4 coming soon)
Brothers: Tale of two sons (PS4)
Arms (Switch)
Seems like they are majorly indies and on the consoles with large multiplatform gaming.
My wife has LOVED playing Lego City Undercover with me on our Switch. We just flew in and were playing it on Switch on the airplane in two player split screen mode lol. I've never seen her play or want to play a game as much in my life. Also, Animal Crossing.
I believe you can play the storyline of Nioh in coop as well. Thats only if you're into tougher games.
The Marvel Ultimate Alliance games are on sale on PSN for $15.99 a pop. You should try those too. I like part two better than one, but both were great fun!
I think Metal Slug on the PS4 would be great for this, and for the Switch i guess Arms or Mario Kart.
