I did expect Switch to do well, but who really expected to do Wii level well?

I had expectations of 50-90 million, with it ranging from severely pessimistic to optimistic.

 

I think people really underestimated the impact of good advertising, an efficient architecture, and mobility. Mobility sells in today's world. People look at the Switch and think, "hey, you can take it anywhere- neat". They don't care about 4k, draw distances, or anything else.

 

I am not sure if it will hit Wii levels, but it will be a damn good success for Nintendo. If they fix the stock issue (something I was concerned about), then I may change my expectation to up to 115 million.

Notice that they said "shipments", not "production".

So, in the next episode, Reggie will apologise with American Ninty  gamers for part of the supplies originally allocated for them being redirected to Japan.

If they are not careful the hype could die down and reverse the trend. Consumer hype is there for good reason, but it also hangs fragile on the word and opinions of others.

They have strong big games coming to keep hype, Splatoon 2 is next month and of course Mario Odyssey will probably be bigger even Zelda BotW, and like they wrote, they increase shipment from next month.

Sales would have been better if they weren't like this for such a long time

But it doesn't look like it will improve much throughout the rest of the year :/

Yup. The wii craze was real. Gamers and non gamers well over it. Most of my gamer and not gamer friends haven't even heard of it. I seriously doubt it will be a similar phenomenon. The wii was the only console I can think of that had such shortages that stores (HMV, GAME, GAMESTATION, etc) would put signs outside saying "Wii now back in stock!!!!".

Seriously though, good news if they can actually pull this off. I keep hearing from people I know that they want to buy a Switch but there are just none available unless you want to be gouged by some scalper.
