Forums - Gaming - Dragon Quest XI has gone Gold - new gameplay vid

Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time has gone gold, series creator Yuji Horii confirmed at today’s Dragon Quest XI “Countdown Carnival” hands-on event in Nagoya. That means development on the game is complete and it is ready for mass production.

New gameplay footage was also shown, demonstrating the “Mysterious Smithing” and the “Skill Panel” systems using the 3DS version, and “Horse Racing” and “Casino” features using the PlayStation 4 version.

Finally, Squaer Enix revealed the third possible restriction for the game’s “Restricted Play” mode, which allows you to play the game with certain features disable. The first two announced restrictions are being unable to shop and being unable to run away from battle. The third possible restriction is being unable to equip armor.

Dragon Quest XI: In Search of Departed Time will launch for PlayStation 4 and 3DS on July 29 in Japan. A Switch version is also planned, but has yet to be shown or dated.

Watch the footage below.

Mysterious Smithing (3DS) – 25:56 to 35:30

Skill Panel (3DS) – 35:30 to 41:31

Horse Racing (PS4) – 41:48 to 44:39

This will actually be my first DQ game, unless I play DQ VIII remake first.

I didn't realize this game was due for a July release. I thought I heard it was coming out in November.
Maybe that was a rumor about the Switch version? Which btw, still strange that they haven't even shown the Switch version.

It's a port, not a remake. That being said the best version is the PS2 original since it has Koichi Sugiyama's amazing music in it. 3DS version only uses MIDI. But still a good port, nonetheless. Definitely try VIII when you can.

A casio with mini games inside the game? awesome.
That horse raceing thingy mini game awesome.
Mysterious Smithing looks awesome too.
Even the skill panel with upgrade roots... its just all looking like it ll be a amasing game.

Big mistake not releasing it on the switch. How hard is it to port the 3ds version to the switch.

A port to me is simply enhanced graphics and not much else.
This has new additional playable characters, new story scenes, new post game dungeons, monster arena challenges, monsters, costumes, recipes, battles are no longer random encounters, a fast forward feature, etc, etc.

So that's very much a remake to me. Whatever you want to call it is fine. But I understand the changes that come with the 3DS version.

I did try DQ VIII ages ago when it was new, but I got turned off by how simplistic the combat system was and ended up not giving it a proper chance. But I heard so much good about it since that I realize I should have given it more of a chance. I intend to do that on 3DS.

Ehh... I don't know about that one XD it's a remake in the same sense as SMT: Devil Survivor DS -> 3DS Overclock ver. is. It's the exact same game, but has a few things added to entice people. Or maybe comparing it to Pokemon. R/S -> Emerald is a better comparison. The 2 new characters aren't that helpful for reasons I won't spoil, the new story scenes are okay. But adding new story scenes = remake is like saying Star Wars rereleases are remakes because of stuff like "Jedi Rocks"... *shudders*. 1 post game dungeon iirc, though DQ8 already has a cool post-game thingy anyway. Monster Arena isnt new unless they added more recruitable monsters which I havent noticed. New Costumes, recipes, no random encounters + fast forward is definitely a plus though.

I encourage you to play any version. This is my favorite game so I own the PS2, iOS, and 3DS ver. And beat them all 100%. However... iOS ver lacks the orchastrated music AND the VA >~> so it's rough.

But as I said, what they added isn't going to be as noticeable as you might think except the last 4 things. Actually, what's weird is they actually changed and rearranged scenes from the original for whatever reason. Some good, some, questionable

It will release on the Switch, it was already officially announced. Its just not releasing simultaniosly, for some reason.I expect a 3 or 4 month difference betwenn the releases.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

And it's  not that big  of  a mistake  both  3ds and ps4  are waay above the switch in terms of hardware.

Also ps4 version  is nr1 in  online  shops.

If that's the version they put on Switch, it will be a catastrophic sales failure by DQ standards.  It would also make no sense as the whole cool dual screen thing on 3DS would be lost.

It's almost certainly the PS4 version.  That version is built on UE4, which the Switch handles rather well, and isn't that technically advanced a game anyway.

Awesome! That means they can start working on the PC port.

Right. As it should be. Making it too different is one design choice, but the emphasis is on remake, and not neccesarily change. They've remade the same game again in a number of ways that affect many aspect of the game. If you just single out one thing, and say that doesn't make it a remake, I agree. But the sum of its parts sets it apprt from something like a port that only has HD graphics as its only difference.
Remake to me denotes the effort that goes into remaking aspects of the game. Take the non-random encounters for example. And because a port can have 0 changes, even graphical, associating it with a term that requires changes feels a lot more appropriate for me when this game has so many. Some remakes are of course more significantly different. But I don't think they set the bar any more than the ports that have 0 changes made to them. Or enhanced ports that only have high definition graphics. Etc. In the end I see ports as fairly straight forward with less emphasis on changing things outside of visual or audio quality, and UI. Significantly more work went into this one to change many aspects of the game that require designers, writers, etc, while still staying true to the original experience of Dragon Quest VIII.

And yeah, I meant to say "New" monster arena challenges. I just didn't want to type out the word new in front of everything. =p

I also heard they changed something else that's a spoiler. You can now

Idk if that really makes it a remake though! I think people are so used to lazy porting that some consider high quality ones remakes. Would you consider WWHD a remake too?

But from what I know, the 3DS ver is the iOS ver but downscaled. The iOS version did have parts that needed to be remade though, so in that department you are definitely not wrong

And yes, you can do that in the end game. Man, now Im mad they changed her VA x.x
