This is my Situation-analyse of the third party situation on Switch:

- After the Wii U debacle, very few 3rd party developper were inclined to take a chance by developping an early title for the console.
- Switch's success probably has 3rd parties at least considering the platform for future games. Those games won't be out for at least a year.
- Most gamers with interest in the big AAA 3rd party games of this gen have already purchased a PS4 or an XB1 or a gaming PC.
- Nintendo was never banking on big AAA 3rd party games for the success of the Switch so I don't see this situation as worrying at all.

There are 2 reasons:

1. the underpowered hardware
2. the legacy of the Wii: the devaluation of the platform and it's game because of the too many casual shit that were release on the then underpowered Wii, and the milking of Nintendo franchises, thus the dilution of game value in an ocean of sub-standard games, which then had an impact on the Wii U and for now the Switch since it's still underpowered.

This might changes depending on Switch sales growth, but given that the hardware is too far from current PS4/Xbox One/PC settings, developing for the Switch means either making a greatly downgraded version OR making games specifically for the Switch, which means you have to be able to sell a lot on that platform.

This works for light performance indie-games or 5 year old games like Skyrim, but not AAAs or perf intensive indie games.

Nintendo's definitely doing better than they were with the WiiU in terms of 3rd party support, but I feel as though they're still going to run into a lot of the same issues that plagued them then, hopefully these strong sales continue and the 3rd party games that are getting released on the system will sell well and will attract other 3rd party developers.

There's a lot of uphill issues for Nintendo. Obviously the hardware makes some ports hard, but it still doesn't entirely explain why games like South Park: Fractured But Whole, Tekken 7, and Marvel Vs. Capcom aren't coming to Switch from supposedly "pro Nintendo" third parties.

I think we also need to realize, when the Wii launched, the XBox 360 was only at about what? 10 million install base? And PS3 was at 0 and started off extremely slow.

Switch is coming into a market where PS4 + XB1 have sold almost 100 million systems already.

Unfortunately, Switch may not be a priority for a lot of devs, even Japanese devs for a while sadly (all the major Japanese IP are now on PS4).

What you might see are a lot of smartphone/legacy title ports once devs wake up and decide to throw out some content. So things like PS3/360 or older ports. We're just gonna have to accept it I guess. Beggars can't be choosers.

(After the) E3: These new games do not appear on PS4/X1

Super Mario Odyssey, Pokken Tournament DX, Splatoon 2, ARMS, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, Fire Emblem Warriors, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Yoshi, Kirby, Pokémon RPG, Metroid Prime 4, No More Heroes 3, Shin Megami Tensei V, and so on...

See, it works both ways. Besides, I wouldn't be too worried to not have some western AAAs when they are already available on other 3 systems. I'd rather have a different system with its own games that take advantage of said hardware. No need to have a 4th clone on the market. Btw, there are also tons of indies and some western third party games too.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

I think sadly a lot is riding on FIFA/Skyrim/NBA2K. If those three have mediocre/bomba sales, there's going to be problems.

Yes, I feel the same.

I'm surprised many of the holiday yearly games were not mentioned for Switch. But that is likely due to me not critically thinking about the time and effort it takes to make changes to a development project once its been funded and is well underway. As a software dev manager myself, this shouldn't be a surprise to me.

Fact is, EVERY game luanching in 2017 was planned and paid for a year or more before Switch dev kits hit their hands and more importantly before Switch launched and demonstrated quickly that it is going to be a success.

So it actually becomes a very simple equation.
1. Switch continues to sell well this year and likely surpasses WiiU LTD.
2. 3rd parties realize there is a market and that most/all of their tools can scale to Switch.
3. Of the titles where #2 is true (will be most), then said company will plan and pay for a Switch version.

NBA2K18, FIFA are going to sell well relative to Switch's userbase size.
As will various older ports like Skyrim, etc.

As Switch continues to sell, EA will throw the token EA Sports yearly titles Switches way (I think they'll have to based on licensing commitments), but they may argue its not powerful enough (true or not) for SW & BF titles.

You'll see CODs, AC, etc all hit as well in 2018.

This year is all 1st party and the proof of concept titles from 3rd parties. The easy stuff they could fit into pre-existing plans as low-risk test beds.

Year 2 will be the coming of the masses.

Then why did you proclaim Xenoblade Chronicles 2 "the best RPG of the year?"

What are your criteria?  Have you PLAYED Xenoblade Chronicles 2?  Have you played Persona 5?  Have you played Ni No Kuni 2?  Have you played NieR: Automata?

What, exactly, is your basis for saying that XC2 is better than those games?

I'm both disappointed in you and this thread. Not only did you focus on a miniscule and useless point in Rol's post to argue about (as of this post), but you also don't seem to be acknowledging how stupid this thread is either, and you know it is.

OP, please realize your argument is pointless. Not only are you arguing to a community of Nintendo fans who'll claim all these third-party games "mean nothing to them" but you also don't understand how Nintendo goes about winning. Nintendo doesn't win off the help of third-parties like other companies. Not necessarily because they don't want to, but because they also can't. Nintendo "losing out" on all these Western third-party games (because it is mainly Western IPs) is par for the course. Yes, the Wii U failed and the Wii U also had horrendous Western third-party support, but not in the beginning. That alone goes to show that the Wii U was a garbage fire that could not be stopped, and third-party games can't make or break Nintendo either. Nintendo seals their fate.

Please don't claim my post is off-topic, it's only an analysis of your assumption.

Edit: To answer your poll, Nintendo's biggest problem is their battle for parts with Apple in order to supply enough stock to meet demand, in the current "situation" of course.

If you like RPGs, then you should have been aware of the pedigree of Xenoblade Chronicles. In your initial post you belittled me, strongly implying that I am way too biased and have no idea what I am talking about, even though the subject was a sequel to a game that received a metascore of 92.

The person who suffers from too much prejudice is you. Or how else would you explain your lack of knowledge despite liking RPGs?

XC 2 is a sequel to a game with 84 on metacritice. Persona 5, Nier Automata and Ni no kuni all have higher metascores. Also higher than Splatoon by the way. Its far from being the best RPG around even if all you go with is metacritic scores.

The game is called Xenoblade Chronicles 2, not Xenoblade Chronicles X2. The X series is likely to continue is something separate, with its own direct sequel. XC2 looks obviously more like the XC that XCX, in pretty much every way, except it is a much more polished title. Takahashi said he wanted to separate the open-world, exploration basee titles and the story-driven, semi-open world ones.

Having said all of that, whether or not XB2 will be better than Persona 5 is mostly up to taste really. Persona games and Xeno games play very differently, but both do what they do good at about the same level of quality and polish.
