Forums - Gaming - OMG!!!! ps3 can now upscale DVD movies ,ps1 and ps2 games upto full 1080p!!

This is what im talking bout people running off about their negative opinoins and worrying only about things that wouldn't help him. Broadening the appeal is somthing that marketing is for not the tech guys. an update in't designed to broaden the appeal. The games will broaden the appeal once they are out.

these features can be done on a pc but so can playing games so whats your point. having more features isn't a bad thing. PS3 owners wanted upsaling and now we get it. You can't make everyone happy overnight but they are slowly but surely adding everything that they can possible can to keep the Ps3 news flowing. whens the last time you went a week without talking about the ps3? There were tons of weeks without 360 news last year and aquite a few weeks without Wii news this year(up until this month new arrives again). Now that the Summer and the Events start poping up there will be gaming news for the Ps3 and Wii every day till the holidays.

I don't know if this is how it works, but there's nothing baring Emotion Engine PS3's of doing software emulation for known supported games.

Reality has a Nintendo bias.

The update is for ALL PS3s, including those manufactured without the EE chip. Those with the EE chip have the added benefit of practically 100% backwards compatibility. Those without the EE chip has less compatibility. The upscaling is software based and is offered as a firmware update to the PS3 operating system, so it will be available for everyone.

To take advantage of upscaling, you will need an HDMI cable.

"Sony Computer Entertainment America has announced that they will be releasing firmware version 1.80 for the PS3 which adds many additional features to the console. Those who use it as a Blu-ray player will now be glad to here that the PS3 will upscale DVDs (as well as PS1 and PS2 games) to 1080p via an HDMI connection, similar to the capability of stand-alone Blu-ray players."

i still dont see why the update wasnt the xmb access during gameplay.. its proven that it can do it... they are holding back features on purpose

You know, I forgot about that. The XMB during gameplay is definitely a much-wanted feature.

If you're responding to me and Shams, I'm not quite sure if you understood what we were talking about.

There are basically two ways of upscaling 3D/vector (but not sprite based) games: one is rendering at the original resolution, and then upscaling that like a picture (using some fancy photoshop like methods); the other is rendering in full resolution, with the original textures scaled (as usual) but with polygons, shading, vector fonts and stuff done at full resolution. The later will usually look a lot better than the former (less jagged mostly, and maybe with better shading, clearer fonts).

Hardware "emulation" usually ends up doing the first thing, as it's an embed, unupdated version of the old hardware doing the rendering, and a scaler processing the pre-rendered image. The second method usually comes as side effect of software emulation - vide Xbox and N64 emulation (in the 360 and the Wii's VC).

What I was saying was that there's nothing limiting the Emotion Engine PS3 of doing the better software based emulation for games that are known to be fully supported, and only falling back to hardware emulation for unsupported games. Whether it actually works that way, I have no idea, but testing a good looking supported game (like I imagine God of War might be) side by side could settle that.

On a side note, sprite games emulation usually works best with upscaling the end picture (or, ideally, the sprites themselves) with a special purpose method (like hqNx), as there's no vector information available. It's a pitty the VC doesn't do that - SMW would look great upscaled to 480p!

Ok guys... this amuses me.

So much trolling and so much anger.

"upsamping sucks, it's useless, and totally a waste of my time. I would rather watch a movie on my 25$ DVD player that dispays horrible image, and I dont care about quality."
"Back to the first one. A great game is a great game. The graphics dont matter. Infact high quality graphics usually means a game sucks... including movies, why I stick with my 8 year old 25$ DVD player. Since I hate quality so much, I'm gonna totally skip all consoles, and all movies, and everything... All I eat is my own poo because I hate quality of any kind, including my food!"
"OMG IT'S WASHIMUL BAN HIM!"
"OMG IT'S HUS BAN HIM!"
"OMG IT'S KWAAD BAN HIM!" (yeah, whatever, I post with myself thank you very much)

seriously, this thread cracks me up, and well, to be honest... the ones who are saying negative things about this, seirously... I am getting remote access from my PSP to my PS3 for free, upsampling old games, and DVDs... for free. Quite a nice upgrade for a freebie.

OFFTOPIC
Guys, those of you who are attacking sony/PS3/PSP on this thread are crazy, you attack sony for releasing an amazing patch/upgrade, and yet nintendo dosent even feature a low quality DVD player, and is soon to start selling the web brouser. That's ok tho. It's great for nintendo to make money, but if sony is giving out great, free updates... it's horrible. What's up with that.

OFFTOPIC2
Guys, I'm not gonna be able to read this thread for like 4 days after I post this, so dont waste your breath expecting a quick reply. I got up a 7AM this morning, it's now 11:15PM, and I gotta drive 4 hours tonight, and then get up at 7AM in the morning... So I can drive a 43,000lb truck at 55mph through a town, with only 2 hours of sleep.

I fly this flag in victory!

@larry: I don't know quite where the hell you learnt maths, but currently the PS3 is selling 3.4:1 over the Xbox360 (2.5k vs 8.3k)

or maybe you were talking about last week? 4:1 (9k vs 2.3k)

it's enough that you make stuff up off the top of your head, but when you make up numbers on a website where the numbers are two clcks away it's just pretty damn stupid.

Anyway, it's May 24, I'd better prepare myself for that PS3 onslaught (I've got some canned food in a bunker under the house)

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

this is great for PS3 owners who can make use of this. I've been hearing people asking for it and Sony finally delivered. Next up is in game access to XMB apparently.
