But this is already like 20 games I've mentioned, and while the quality of them can be subject of debate, I consider them at the very minimum good games - which makes them good enough to put as Wii's third party support.

And then Nintendo dies as a console manufacturer and still doesn't get third party support. At least right now they have Japanese low and mid-tier third parties in the palm of their hands, and are making porting to Switch an easy option for Indie - AA titles, despite the performance differences. 

The worst thing Nintendo can do is directly compete with the PS4/XBO because they are so far behind in brand-loyalty, online infrastructure, etc, and the market is already crowded. Nintendo is doing the right thing by pushing into the handheld market, and merging it with their home-console infrastructure. Making ports easy allows for moderate (albeit not the best) third-party suppport, the ball just has to get rolling. 

Sony had zero brand loyalty in the gaming industry before the PS1 came out. They bested Nintendo in a single generation by doing exactly what I am saying Nintendo should do. Right now Microsoft is making huge mistakes, and is actively bowing out of the console market. MS head honchos are on record saying they don't care about how many Xboxes they sell. Microsoft is akin to Sega in the mid ninties right now, and the market it ripe for a new competitive console.

I agree that Switch has been a fantastic decision. AA devs will love the system like you said.

 If we were to include every single PS3/360 third party title that was at the minimum good we'd have a list of over 100 games. In comparison Wii didn't have good third party support at all.



It would take the 80's and 90's never happening. So it won't change any time soon.

Wii: Graphically underpowered. Third party devs would rather sell to the combined PC + 360 + PS3 owners than take a chance making their game for a single system. Wii sold well, but active user base was very low. Very little third party support.

N64: Carts were expensive and couldn't hold as much memory. Cutting edge graphics. Low sales compared to PS1. Nintendo pissed devs off with tyranical bussiness practices from the NES/SNES days. Very little third party support.

Gamecube: Tiny Disks were a pain to make games for. Sales of the console were low. Best third party support after NES, and SNES.

NES/SNES: Graphically competitive. Good sales. Easy to develop for.  Fantastic third party support.

So what does Nintendo have to do to get good third party support? Simple. Make a system that is graphically competitive, sells well, and is easy and cheap to make games for.

Too many surface level deducations which leads to a flawed conclusion.

 

I'll retort by asking a single question.  If your game takes ~4 years to develop, what devices do you allocate your resources for?

PC, and then you port it to whatever high end console is out by the time you finish it.

Thats the bit thats not so simple. With a graphically competitive system you'd need to address how they'd pull an audience away from the PS4/X1 so late in the game, or even just in general. If it was to arrive just before the PS5/X2, you'd need to question how they make it cheap and still profitable. Without selling well or attracting the right audience third party support wouldn't last long.

were all third party games I enjoyed on Wii which I can recall. There were probably a few others as well. 



Nintendo do not have the brand power with home consoles.

I'd be fine with Wii-level third party support. With those games plus 1st party that's enough for me.
