Forums - General - Games vs Movies

this is a tough one for me.. theres so many great stuff so i decided to break them into genres and see who comes on top.

i do realise theres a lot of multi genre films and games but that i believe would mess things up even more but if you're up to it then be my guest. also you can name as many films and games as you like. only rule is 4 genres or more if you wish..

here my list

SCI FI - inception, matrix, 2001 aso, star wars and so many more the list is endless ..and as for games theres only a few great ones imo and not even those comes close.

HORROR- silent hill 2 is terror pure from start to finish.. while there are great movies as well i believe that nothing creeps even close once silent hill itself comes to life and plays tricks with your mind not to mention one of the best/sadest endings ever in a videogame.

ADVENTURE - zelda games alone i can replay hundreds of hours but cant rewatch a 2hour adventure film.

FANTASY - again games ff9 alone is enough to throw any other movie into the garbage and yes even the LoTR trilogy which is overrated :D

I think overral theres more great movies than videgames but film has been around for over a hundred years so the only way to compare them in any way that makes sense is by genre. and yes i do realise i contradict myself.

It's a no contest for me, I love video games much more than movies. Now music vs. video games, on the other hand is much tougher, especially when a lot of my favourite music comes from games.

A few games? Here's some of my favourites:

Final Fantasy X, VII

Persona 3, 4

King's Field

Silent Hill, 2

Crash Bandicoot 2

Super Smash Bros., Melee, Brawl

Super Mario 64, Galaxy

Street Fighter II, Alpha 3

Metal Gear Solid, 2

Heavy Rain

WWF Smackdown!, 2: Know Your Role, Just Bring It, Shut Your Mouth, Here Comes the Pain, vs. Raw

TimeSplitters, 2, Future Perfect

Ninja Gaiden (2004)

Tekken 2, Tag Tournament

Soul Calibur

and many others!

Now for movies:

The Matrix

First Blood

Die Hard

Riki-Oh

Street Fighter

and there's some others, but as you can see it's much harder for me to make a list than it is for games.

Edit: well, actually just talking about them, I really like the Evil Dead trilogy, too.

I don't watch movies so games win by default.

Watching movies isn't very interesting in general. I mean, I can enjoy a lot of movies, but I don't particularly want to watch movies because watching them isn't that interesting, and most movies aren't very memorable. A game doesn't even have to be very good to be somewhat memorable (even if story isn't the memorable part), but a movie has to be pretty exceptional to be memorable.

Both are a passion of mine, but I have to go with movies. The practical will always impress me more than the digital.

I hardly ever replay games, I've watched many movies multiple times.

Sci-Fi: Books first, yet movies still blast sci-fi games out of the water. While HZD has a great sci-fi story, I couldn't stop thinking how awesome the movie could be leading up to zero dawn.
Blade Runner, 2001, 12 Monkeys, Children of men, Akira, The Matrix, Interstellar, Inception, Dark City, Moon, Brazil, Alien, Terminator 1&2, A scanner darkly, Gattaca, Strange days, District 9, Chappie, Logan's run. So much variety.

As for animation, movies have games beat there too. Ghibli, Pixar, Laika, Disney, Aardman, games haven't produced anywhere near that level in animating characters.

Yet I agree games have the upper hand when it comes to horror. Silent Hill 2, RE7 in VR, Outlast, Siren, far more memorable than any horror movie I have seen.

For fantasy/adventure, games can have that too. It's been too long since a great fantasy movie, I don't care about superhero movies which seem to have replaced that genre. 172 hours clocked in Botw is proof enough. Last fantasy movie I watched, rewatch of Legend I think almost a year ago.

Racing: games of course. Fast and furious no thanks, Rush wasn't bad yet I rather race myself then watch a movie about racing.

Movies still have games beat when it comes to making you think or pushing the envelope. There is no City of god, The great beauty or Tideland in games.

Comedy: I guess the user base is too small for comedy to work in games. I happen to love Wes Anderson movies, others hate them. Comedy is very specific, too risky to specialize in in games. Comedy also relies heavily on timing, very hard to do interactive comedy.

All that said, nowadays I play games far more than I watch movies. It's easier to stay awake while playing a game.

I have 200 hours on BotW now. That game costed me $60, meaning I paid less than 33 cents per hour to enjoy aan unbelievable game.

And that's the game at full price. I have 60 hours currently on FFXIII, which i bought for $5. That is an insane value for a game.

Movies aren't enjoyable more than once. To make it worse, we're seeing loads of sequels and terrible comedies being thrown at us. Is this really a contest?

Eh, I prefer games. I can't be bothered with movies unless they're Star Wars or something I never thought would be good but turned out amazing (Lion is a recent one).

Games are just better. Cant explain why. Some say you don't replay games as much as movies but for me thats not true. Ive replayed SMB3, SMBW, Pokemon FR/LG & Emerald as well as plenty of others as much as any movie I really like.

Like someone else said, music makes it tougher. Stuff like friggin' John Williams is legendary. He may be my favorite composer, well either him or Koichi Sugiyama
