Forums - Gaming Discussion - Updated: Far Cry 5 announced, set in Modern Montana

The timing could be unfortunate. Or, it could be very fortuitous. If Rockstar misses the stated 2017 launch, as seemingly 75% of people expect, people may pick up Far Cry as a kind of consolation prize. I'm really looking forward to playing a western this year. So, I'd likely go for Far Cry is RDR isn't available. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

So it seems that Far Cry 5 is not in fact a Spaghetti western. Kotaku's Jason Schreier has stated that he has heard nothing about it being a western, only that it is set in Montana. Kotaku has really good sources at Ubisoft, they've leaked alot of Ubisoft games over the years, including the last several Assassin's Creed games.

Additionally, I've done some digging on my own and found this, from over a year ago. A radio station in Missoula, Montana reported that some Ubisoft devs were travelling around interviewing Montana residents and looking at the sights in order to accurately portray modern Montana in an upcoming video game.

Last but not least, I have heard it through the grapevine that Far Cry 5 is indeed based in Modern Montana, and will have a plotline surrounding militias and cults.

Montana? That's different.

I think it's very safe to say if Far Cry 5 is set in Montana it will indeed be a Western. Has anyone here been in Montana recently? I have, and its fucking empty of anything. The only option is to do a gunslinger thing in Western states if that is indeed the locale

I'm still hoping it'll be a western, although the chances of that are... well, I suppose they're the same as they were before since we've not had a definitive no answer, lol. I suppose being set in modern Montana could be cool, especially if you get to explore the countryside and stuff too

I'm sure you'll be able to. Wilderness exploration is a staple of the Far Cry series, and Montana has plenty of gorgeous countryside to explore. Dangerous animals as well, including grizzly bears and mountain lions, another series staple.

ehhh unless it literally takes place in the mountains of Montana it will be pretty unexciting. like 70%+ of Montana is flat emptiness (I drove all through it in the last year). The mountains are pretty but I don't really grasp how a modern Farcry game would function there plot wise. There is nothing particularly interesting besides regular wildlife (you could pick a ton of states to center a game in where there are bears).

It definitely has to be like 1800s or early 1900s game with gunslinging if it's in Montana. Modern Montana is boring as fuck unless you want to go hiking or camping in certain parts. THe only logical time period would be the move outwest a few hundred years ago

Montana was one of the mining states so it would be logical. Not the biggest, but plenty of prospectors went there. Today all there is in Montana though are a million casinos and a lot of emptiness. Montana I believe is the poorest state as well

jesus.

the more I think about it the more I start to doubt that Montana is really where the next Far Cry game will be located. The only answer for Montana being the locale would be a Western game, and Montana seems like an odd choice when there are states far more infamous for the Western gold-searching themes like California and Nevada

Well that's an interesting twist. Ought to be interesting to see what they've come up with.

Honestly i don't see how they can make the game really interesting.

Hunting will be dimmed down, because really what can you hunt in Montana.

Would have preferred to see one in a wrecked city.

Modern day cults is actually really interesting. Looking very much forward to this one. The map is probably big enough to feature both the mountainous woods and the flats of Montana. Looking forward to clearing outposts where the cult members have locked themselves inside the church.
