Oh I see, OP is adding up both Switch and 3DS sales cause I was like, the Switch never sold 21 million units from April 1 2017 to March 31 2018. So by fiscal year you mean the total output of a company. But by that logic shouldn't we add software sales too? And If I may push this logic further, shouldn't we add the entire output of a company? Meaning all the TV's and all the other hardware Sony sells too?

But yeah, adding 3DS sales and you got a figure that is a bit higher than the PS4 alone, congrats Nintendo.

And since we are in the topic of figures, Labo doesn't seem to be doing too well in Japan, their primary market so I'm curious to hear how Labo is doing worldwide?

No, Rol's point is that Switch + 3DS outsold PS4 + Vita, making Nintendo the market leader. You can't just add in TV's to make Sony the market leader. And usually, VGChartz doesn't factor in software when determining market share (see front page).

Go ahead and add software, Nintendo sells a shitload more software than Sony.

Adding TVs and other non gaming products makes no sense when talking about gaming.

Japan is not Switch's primary market, its actually the weakest based on the three regions Nintendo divides shipments into.

But if you don't add the other stuff Sony makes you don't technically speaking have the ACTUAL fiscal year total results of the company. It seems arbitrary to me to say, let's add all the hardware Nintendo makes but not all the hardware Sony makes.

I mean, don't get me wrong, you can do that if you want but by that logic we can do any types of measurements we want. But the title is about the fiscal years of those two companies so pitching one machine against all the machines of another company, seems a bit biased to me.

Here are my biased figures: Sony has sold 1 PS4 inside the space that is my house and Nintendo has sold zero Switches inside that same space. On the other hand I can counter that too by adding that Sony has sold zero vitas inside the space that is my house but Nintendo has sold 1 3DS inside the same space. So I am both technically CORRECT and also BIASED in my figures. Same with this thread.

What? Nobody is talking about fiscal year total results, it's about marketshare in the gaming market. If you want to determine Apple's smartphones marketshare will you add in Mac and iPad sales as well? HomePod, maybe? The title is about Nintendo returning to the number 1 spot in the gaming market in the last fiscal year, not about comparing overall fiscal year results of the companies. Rol didn't factor in sales of NES and SNES Mini, either.

Well, maybe, unlike some I am not going to have a heart attack if Nintendo sells more software than Sony. Or even a shitload more... which it doesn't, I mean listening to that line one could think Nintendo sells ten times more software than Sony and Sony is pretty much bankrupt cause their games don't sell. I honestly never understood this need to hear that your company completely crushes the others to feel better about yourself but yeah, whatever.

As for adding TV's and all that stuff, it indeed makes no sense when talking about gaming but it MAKES sense when talking about the FISCAL YEAR of any given company and "fiscal year of a company" is what is implied in the title of this thread, right?

But I don't want some very "passion-driven" Nintendo folks over here to lose sleep at night over this so yeah, Nintendo kicked Sony's ass if comparing both Switch AND 3DS vs only the PS4, congrats. There, feeling better?

Why are you so thin-skinned over this? :P You simply read the thread title wrong: It's about Nintendo returning to the #1 spot in the gaming market last fiscal year. It's also very clear when reading the original post. And it's about all gaming hardware sold by Nintendo versus all gaming hardware sold by Sony (PS4 and Vita), not some arbitrary thing Rol made up on the fly. We've measured market share on VGChartz by this method since 2007. You can absolutely open a thread about fiscal year results for both companies and I wouldn't deny that Sony absolutely crushes Nintendo when it comes to revenue and profits. And if Sony did indeed sell more software this fiscal year (if have no idea) that's fine and I agree with you that software sales are important as well. I'd just argue we should look at them separately.

Then maybe OP should have factored in the NES and SNES mini if you really want this to be about the "gaming" market, that's fine with me. And also the software both Nintendo and Sony have sold. And I would be fine even if Nintendo comes first.

But there is something based in my humble opinion, about factoring two systems (Switch and 3DS) vs one system (PS4). And again you can do it if you want but to be clear, If I bring this up it's because I wouldn't do that against another system. I love my PS4 but if a thread appears about how the PS4 + the PSVR + Vita total figures are bigger than sales of the Xbox one, I would call out that bias too. But maybe that's just me.

Nintendo sells far more software than Sony but i never implied Sony software sells bad or they are going to go bankrupt over it. Nice job at making up arguments that were never said.

Maybe read the OP and not just the title? Its 100% clear the topic is about VIDEO GAME HARDWARE. Dont get salty because you couldnt comprehend that.

Says the "passion-driven" Sony fan getting offended by a comparison of gaming hardware sales on a website dedicated to gaming sales. Its not PS4 vs NSW+3DS, its PS4+Vita vs NSW+3DS.

But nobody does that! We simply don't have hard Vita numbers and so have to make an educated guess.

Edit: And I wouldn't factor in the SNES Mini because that's not a modern gaming console as you can't change cards or discs. It's more like the very ancient ones that only had a handful of games included. But that's another discussion, I think.

Salty me? LOL

I'm kicking back to reality this "hornet's nest" on the topic of figures, the hornets start stinging cause they don't like to be called out on figures and I'm the one that is salty?

I'm talking about figures (topic) you call me out on being salty (personal attack) and I'm the one that is salty? Oh boy.

I prefer to stay on the topic at hand if you don't mind so you should keep your personal impressions about me being salty or not to yourself, unless making this personal is so important to you.

So back to the topic. I am discussing games sales, not sure why you end up your little attack by saying I'm offended by a comparison of hardware sales on a gaming sales website cause I'm pretty sure I'm NOT talking about the weather or the expensive fees one must pay to enter universities, I'm pretty sure I'm taking about sales in this thread, right? Or maybe you can't comprehend that. If you could comprehend what I said you'd notice that I'm talking about comparing what is comparable. I also added that you may compare anything you want but it comes across as biased and I would not do that. I'm only applying the standards I apply to myself, to you too, that's all.
