Forums - Gaming - PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS sold 2 million copies worldwide in just a month

Bluehole Studio today announced that its battle royale first-person shooter, PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS, has sold two million copies worldwide. PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS was released in late March and it took Bluehole Studio almost a month in order to hit this milestone.

PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS is described as a last-man-standing shooter being developed with community feedback. Starting with nothing, players must fight to locate weapons and supplies in a battle to be the lone survivor.

The game is currently available in Early Access. The team expects to fully release the game in approximately six months, and is going to focus on implementing the modding tools and readying a fully polished battle royale experience.

“We have weapons and attachments, animations and gunplay in the game, and will concentrate on tuning each.”

The final version of the game will incorporate modding tools that will allow players to customize and play the game the way they want. Furthermore, it will feature more content and new features that will be based on feedback from the community during Early Access.

Though it's not my cup of tea, I will give it another looking into upon release, provided my friends are wanting to do the same. 2 million copies being sold in just a month is pretty insane for an indie dev like that, especially for a Battle royale style shooter. It's already picking up more players than there was on EA's BF1 and SWBF. EA should take notes at some point, because the devs behind PUB are doing something right.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

I've never even heard of that game before. But congratulations to the developers of the game, I guess.

I just picked this up a week or so ago. Great game, especially for an early access build. Much deserved success for them. I am excited to see what the final version will be like.

And no one knows why. It just suddenly popped up in all of my friends list. From what I've seen it's not particularly great. I can see the appeal, especially if you're in it with a team but there are a lot better games out there.

My cousin and his buddies are currently playing this. They were big on Rust before it. Looks interesting but it's just not for me. I'm wary that although there is a lot to enjoy in these types of game, many seem to perpetually be in Early Access form and never actually see a full release.

Games like these don't really need a final version. You hop in, the devs continually improve it as long as player base is there and then it dies off. I'd say living through all the changes in this "beta" stage is part of the experience.

I doubt this game will be talked about much a year from now.

For sure.  I understand the appeal but I guess I'm just a bit of a gramps when it comes to this business model.

I agree that not many will be talking about it down the road.

It not just pops out of nowhere I think some guy(s) behind dayz/arma worked on it and it had some excitement but arma/dayz are not so popular on Vgchartz..

I kind of enjoy watching people play the game on twitch people like cyanide are fun especially if sovietwomble pops up aswell.

Agreed. I don't often watch streams but this game can be a quite good to watch depending on the broadcaster. I watch Ninja mostly because he's the only name I recognise from back in his Halo days. Might give this cyanide guy a look next time.

I think it's pretty obvious. The guy behind the game (PlayerUnknown) was the one working on the DayZ, H1Z1 and Arma BattleRoyale modes so that many streamers and Youtubers who played the other games played Battlegrounds to check it out.

Most streamers really liked it (even more than the other games they play since years) and their viewers bought the game as well. And then their friends and so on...

The guy behind this game has a huge name in this genre because of his previous works, it was only a matter of how good the game will be in the opinion of fans of this genre to reach these crazy numbers.
