I think it's pretty obvious. The guy behind the game (PlayerUnknown) was the one working on the DayZ, H1Z1 and Arma BattleRoyale modes so that many streamers and Youtubers who played the other games played Battlegrounds to check it out.
Most streamers really liked it (even more than the other games they play since years) and their viewers bought the game as well. And then their friends and so on...
The guy behind this game has a huge name in this genre because of his previous works, it was only a matter of how good the game will be in the opinion of fans of this genre to reach these crazy numbers.
