Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Used Costly Air Freight To Get More Switches Onto The Market

TOKYO— Nintendo Co. NTDOY 5.62% said it used aircraft to ship its new Switch videogame machine in its first month on the market, an unusual and costly logistics measure responding to unexpectedly high demand.

Earlier, Nintendo said it shipped 2.74 million units of the Switch in the month after it went on sale March 3, up from an initial plan of two million.

“We carried some of the Switches by plane in March to serve our customers more promptly,” a company spokesman said. He said Nintendo switched back in April to less-expensive sea freight to replenish store shelves.

Ace Research Institute analyst Hideki Yasuda said further use of airfreight was possible because the item remains hard to find at retailers globally. “Air is a big profit-squeezer because it could cost additional ¥5,000 per unit,” or about $45, he said.

Interesting I guess. Kind of an interesting business calculation, they did lose some money no doubt by doing this, but it's effectively good PR so maybe it was worth it. They were willing to get those extra units out to beat forecasts I think, they probably sold a few units at cost or near cost to do so, but it's still a win because of software + accessory sales + good news for the fiscal year.

Very interesting. The Switch keeps surprising us. Not to mention it still being supply constrained in May is impressive.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Let it never be said that Nintendo didn't try to help meet and keep up with the demand of the Nintendo Switch.

I think probably they got word that the initial two shipments were selling out quickly and weighed the pros/cons of getting in a quick extra shipment before the end of the month (March) to be able to hit a certain target above their expected forecast.

Nintendo needs to ship by plane again.

But the haters told me they under shipped the system on purpose so it would be sold out

Reminds me of an old quote by kaz hirai in late 2000 shortly after ps2 launched, how they started air freighting them to get product to stores quicker.

How effective is this though? How many Switches are delivered per plane?

But the Switch is in store everywhere! Nintendo didn't ship a lot of units! They purposefully undershipped! :p

On a serious note, this is good news. Means they are committed to providing enough units for customers. They were way too conservative with their shipments during the Wii / DS days. There's no reason to let customers pay €400 for a Switch on Amazon, for instance. Get the product out there and let customers spend that extra money on games.

I think it's just an example of how nuts the Switch demand is.

Delivering by plane was likely just a temporary measure so that Switch stock wasn't empty for weeks on end.

Props to Nintendo though, industry needs them to stick around and provide ample competition.
