A table that has been posted very recently and was easy to find:

All numbers in US-Dollars.

And people thought nintendo was dying when they were actually making a bigger profit than sony despite sony having the most hardware.

Nintendo finds a way to make a profit out of almost everything. There's no way this company is dying soon like everybody thought it would happen a few years back.

Which really makes you question the competency of analysts and journalists who said that Nintendo should or will go the way of Sega and become a 3rd party (which really seemed to be the general consensus three years ago, frightning).

I actually believed in the doomsaying myself and feared that Nintendo would face this fate someday. Well, until I saw how much money Nintendo really made and I read how they run their business. Out of all the companies in this industry, Nintendo is by far the safest bet to stay in this business until the end of time.

agreed - it's SW sells amazing - no matter what the hardware sells. The HW selling amazing this generation just means more profit than usual.

I imagine the majority of that profit actually came from owning the handheld market.

exactly.....

.....maybe, cuz we can't make that up out of those figures
but the gamboy has been very important
without it nintendo might have pulled a sega after the gamecube

''Hadouken!''

they probably took a loss the year the famicom was launched, they had to recall it and redesign the mother board, so in 1983 they probably took a loss,

A lot of the money on that list comes from software and handhelds, had the wii not been a success they might of been better off just making software and handhelds instead, the profits dont show that side of the story, what analysts never expected was for nintendo to do a turnaround in the console business.

Its a safe bet to say nintendo will be around for a long time, however that doesnt necesarily mean they will be in the console business for a long time, all depends on how well they can continue to be succesful.

nobody thought nintendo would die they just thought they would get out of the home console business. for a little while all there many was coming from hadhelds

@lultor,

They will be in the console business for as long as it is profitable, and considering their track record that is probably for a long while.

Yes of course, but if console sales had continued to decline then that would of hurt them a lot, not only in console sales but in software sales, if the cost to develop a console and its software is more then they can make from selling them even if they make a profit per unit sold it doesnt help them much.

Of course this is only theoretical since they are now succesful but thats what the comments of them going the route of sega was refering to, they might of sold a lot more software if it was on the ps2 for instance, but no one will knows what would of could of happened anyways :)

Are these amounts adjusted for inflation?
