The only reason it happened this gen is because of 4K TV's.  That is all.

And next gen there will also be more than enough people with 1080p TVs. Why not offer them a cheaper console version than the 4K-model which plays the same games?

1. Because by the time the PS5 launches most people that by consoles will have a 4K TV and they will only get more common over the course of the next generation.

2. Because having a lower teir console will keep developers from getting the most out of the more powerful hardware.

3. Because it would complicate the market and Sony would have to produce two different systems for what would likely end up being similar total sales numbers.

4. Because if they can offer the more powerful hardware at a reasonable console price then why bother making a weaker one?

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Lol.... I think a lot of people aren't seeing these console iterations for what they really are. Even after sony kinda let it slip.

These mid cycle refreshes are in truth just generation extenders without the risk of losing their core user base to always getting cheaper PC hardware.

At the end of the day, this ensures they can release the next consoles in 2020/2021 ( a good 7-8yrs) after they launched the current consoles and not too many people would bitch and complain.

That also puts them in a position where they can release PS5/XB2 hardware with already established (aka cheaper) components and hit a entry level $400 price point. Its all about the Looong game.

Lat year thre was hardware buzz, this year there is hardware buzz again.... next year they will be silent and just talk about services and games and price cuts and deals..... then in 2019 the rumors will start making the rounds again. Then it 2020 there will be reveals and maybe even releases.

Sony litterally said this was why the Pro was coming out. Because near the end of the generation hardcore gamers tend to want a more powerful system, so they made the Pro to try and keep them in the ecosystem.

The more people keep buying this stronger versions, the more they'll want to give them reasons to keep buying them, which means the disparity between the versions of the same games will grow (and not always just adding things to the premium version, but taking things away from the standard) until the justification of "it's considerably more powerful" comes with exclusives to show it or games optimized for it instead of for the standard version.

Companies are in for the money, they don't give a flying shit about anything else than making money, and if they can make more people pay more and more often, they'll do it in a blink of an eye, screwing the consumer as much as they are allowed to.

Good points there.... can't argue with the fact that all you have said is actually "possible".

But I still think its highly unlikely though.

This isn't really the natural evolution, but a forced evolution as a result of increased competition in the marketplace.
Microsoft placed a heavy emphasis on PS4 winning due to power differences. 360 won its gen for a long time due to performance differences as well as price and coming out earlier.

There is a very weird business mentality that coming out first, and having the best value, is what wins a generation. This is of course a fallacy because it's actually the games that win the gen, but nevertheless, both companies (sony and MS) knew that a generation was going to come sooner than normal, and so the reaction was to create a mid-gen console upgrade in order to stay competitive.

It sucks for console gamers to have to deal with something like this, but when you're up against a giant like MS, you gotta be prepared.

I agree.

Consoles are moving towards the mobile scenario.

1. Launch console A that is power level 1 at $399.
2. Launch console B that is power level 2 at $499.

- wait 2 years -
3. Launch console C that is power level 3 at $499.
4. Lower price / rebrand A at $299 and B at $399.
rinse / repeat each year or 2 years

why?
1. You build a true ecosystem of hardware and software. Say good by to droughts!
2. There is no longer an issue of BC as you would naturally continue supporting for several iterations of consoles.
3. There is always a new hardware you could purchase at several price levels that allows play-ability of nearly all games in that ecosystem.
4. Significant reduction of costs associated to new console generations as all tooling is continually and gradually improved vs fully rebuilt.
5. Can increase monetization of hardware through upgrades, subscription services, etc.

Supporting two HW models well is not as easy as flipping a switch.

If you want multiple HW models from day one, expect to pay a higher price overall. Consoles can deliver the best value by concentrating on one hardware design that can quickly be cost reduced by selling in large volume. Lower volume per model, higher R&D costs to design multiple models, both models will be more expensive or less powerful overall.

Although it does seem that the pro revision is a tiny bit further ahead on the power curve at release than the ps4 was at launch. PS4 launch, best gpu did about 5tf (gtx 780 ti), factor 2.7 faster. PS4 pro launch, best gpu did about 11tf (gtx titan x), factor 2.6 faster. Yet still the same cpu and memory.

Yes, because of what would eventually happen with it. They would eventually make exclusive games for the better/upgraded version for one reason or another.

To get the more expensive model to sell more. Hardware has to sell to a certain point to be able to make a profit off of the software. If the more expensive version doesn't sell as well, they'll likely change policies and strategies regarding it. Why offer that version if it being there doesn't increase their profits one or another? There's no point in making a upgraded console if it doesn't sell.

Why should they be interested in selling more of the expensive model than the less expensive model (or otherwise) if the profit from the hardware is the same or the profit difference is neglible? The software profit is important.

The cumulative hardware base of basic + pro model is important, not the distribution between the different models. And they can expand the cumulative base with different price points to reach different groups of buyers.

They would have more profit by not making another .5 console that's redundant. The reasons why they made .5 home consoles in the first place is because of 4k TVs and VR.  If it was a good idea, they would have made .5 home consoles awhile ago.

Its great I get to own a PS4 at launch and buy a better Xbox later and then go to PS5, play all games across all platforms and get improvements left and right. As long as both companies do it I will just hop back and forth between main console lol

Anyway, its just options as long as launch owners are not hurt in a bad way, which isn't happening to Xbox One or Ps4 owners, its all good. I would have liked to have a clearer roadmap like Xbox did by announcing the next console way in advance to avoid buying a console just to find out there is a better version around the corner.

The bestest thing:

PS5 utilizes all its power budget for 1080/1440p gaming so we get the best possible graphics and effects. The Pro which would cost $200-300 more would allow for higher res/fps gaming. Hell gimme dat $999 PS5 Skynet with all the bells n whistles.

Everybody wins.

I want a $750- PS5 pro with all the power they can stuff into that console.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar
