Forums - Gaming - Wait, DID Horizon First Week Global Sales Really Outpace BotW's? (PLEASE READ FIRST POST)

Which did you enjoy more?

Breath of the Wild 402 32.74%

Horizon: Zero Dawn 377 30.70%

I haven't played both yet/Unsure 286 23.29%

See Results 163 13.27%

Total:1,228

I mean, if it did it's not that surprising. Look how many PS4s are owned out there in the wild, versus what has from the getgo been a limited Switch supply. Wait and see what the figures look like after Holiday 2017, for a better guage. Either way, I (for the most part) love BoTW, and have heard really good things about Horizon. I'm curious to maybe try it later this year.

Another thread which wants to compare HZD and BotW (in this case even twice as the thread is about sales in the title and quality in the poll). HZD can be really glad it was released close to BotW...

The answer to title and poll is simple: Both games are sales successes, but BotW will forever be remembered as the better game.

Nice to see that with that poll some people are looking at breath of the wild as it really is in retrospect. HZD is so much better and much more innovative than BOW, My mate deleted my account of 20 or so hours so he can start his game (Thanks for that Nintendo) and I was a bit upset for a while until I realized I had played over 20 hours and I'm still dragging my way through it, good game, better than skyward sword for sure but it's no where near the hyperbole and 100% scores.

The game actually ASKS on startup which user it should take and still your mate decided to delete your progress? You can quickly create a new user at that point.

That is subjective.

Nope. No matter how many threads people will make about these two games, it's already settled that BotW will go down in games history as a masterpiece, HZD as just a good game.

All these comments about comparing BotW with it's small base vs Horizon's larger one makes me wonder more so, How does BotW compare to Twilight Princess's FW sales?

TP had 432,864 on first week on Wii and a lower number which I can't find on Gamecube. BotW had 1,117,237 on Switch and 372,238 on WiiU. (all according to VGC)

But TP did not start globally. Still, I think if you add european first week and japanese first week to global, TP is still behind BotW.

That relly isnt suprise, PS4 has instal base of 55m while Wii U thats dead around 13-14m and Switch has limited stock at launch.
Saying that I think Zelda BotW will LT sell better because it's huge system seller and its must have title for Switch, definitely will have great legs.

Well, the race isn't over yet. Seeing how Twilight Princess sold during all of the Wii's life Zelda is going to comfortably outsell Horizon when all is said and done.

Zelda is a franchise that sells for years, it's not that front loaded. That being said, both games are amazing titles, so have fun with whichever you pick (preferably both).

While i expect Zelda will end up on top in the end, it's a bit odd that so many in this thread are trying to paint Horizon's initial victory as totally expected when it absolutely was not. Despite the PS4's install-base, only a minority predicted Horizon would sell as well as it has. It was a brand new IP releasing next to the latest entry in a legacy series about to get a push from a brand new console's launch. It was expected to do well, but 1.5m+? Not by many.

It's also worth noting that while install-base is relevant, they can't be compared linearly. 1 million PS4 users is not the same as 1 million WiiU/Switch users, etc. That Zelda also outsold every previous entry in the series, despite the 2nd smallest release install-base, should make the inadequacies of that comparison clear.

Would actually be surprising if it hadn't. Launch title versus hyped game released to a 50m+ install base. Launch titles can't rely on big first weeks, they'll have to have long legs. Twilight Princess was the same, it even got all the way to 8.5m, starting with what a mere 800/900k.

using user base as an excuse, great... well I can name multiple games on consoles with larger base and still underperformed. Point is people hiding behind the fact that wii U is dead yes Wii U is dead for the future but those 13m+ users didnt buy it to play Netflix or the latest Call of Duty.. they bought it on the promise of Nintendo Games, zelda.. I wonder how Ninty fans explain Splatoon Success a new ip on an even smaller user base, or Mario Kart, Smash bros.
So downplaying a userbase where almost all nintendo exclusive sold 5m+ is amusing. Not to mention Zelda is a default bundle for hyped up switch what does it has to compete with Arms?? While Horizon had to compete with Neir, yakuza, nioh all exclusive games on the market.

some people are having hard time accepting that their beloved franchise has been beaten by a new IP.
