Forums - Gaming - Games released this gen you think will and won't age well?

Breath of the Wild will age VERY well. It will last long due to the art style and physics. Heck, I think most Nintendo games (besides Starfox Zero) will age pretty well.

For Sony, Uncharted will probably stand the test of time. It'll definitely look outdated, but the visuals are great enough to last for quite some time.

I personally don't see No Man's Sky aging well. There will probably be a space explorer game which will blow it out of the water. Unfortunate, but it leaves me hoping for a game with the gameplay of Minecraft, but with a different artstyle.

I disagree when HDR really takes of I think Nintendo games will start to look dull. You should try playing R&C on PS4 pro in HDR and 2160p (with a few tricks) and then play R&C a crack in time or tools of destruction 9n PS3. The lack of HDR is very evident and makes cartoony games look outdated. Cartoony or animation style or shell shaded or whatever are very colour dependent. HDR will make SDR games look dull in comparison.

Counter to what many here feel, i think stuff like Uncharted 4 will actually age quite well. I feel like we've arrived at the point that as long as the game in question makes good use of its technology and knows where to use a degree of stylization to make up for the technical shortcomings of its time, it'll never look actively bad.

They won't age as well as highly stylized stuff like BotW or Persona 5 (both of which look great despite having already effectively aged almost a generation), but i don't see us looking at games like Uncharted 4 in 10+ years and thinking they look bad. We don't even do that for many of the 7th gen's better balanced titles.

In say, 10 years from now, what are some of the games released this generation that will have aged particularly well or poorly?

all the online multiplayer games... they will all be worthless 10years from now.

Single player and story based games age best.

Telltale games.

We're past the time where games will stop aging well. If a game is good now, it'll be good forever.

And we are WAY past the time where a game that looks good today will look bad tomorrow.

That being said, I never really understood "aging" anyway. Good games are good. Bad games are bad. There shouldn't be revisionism about that. People bring up games like The Order as if it wasn't critically panned the second it came out. It won't be memorable, but it's not like people in ten years won't be able to cope with the controls or will consider the visuals an eye sore because of advances in development and technology.

It really depends on what aging means in this context. In terms of visuals it just depends on how strong the art and visual design is. Graphical quality is a secondary concern in that sense, as there are games from every generation that still look very good simply because they have such well defined and strong look. Games that lack a strong visual identity will likely be the ones that won't hold up in the long run.

As far as gameplay is concerned that really depends on the ways a given genre evolves. A new gameplay addition on a well received game could either become the industry standard or something that is looked as a mistake or an evolutionary dead-end in hindsight.

Any game with a unique art direction masking lower graphics will probably do well, like Persona 5 and BotW. Thinks like Horizon, watch dogs, GTA will probably age terribly.

Any Realistic game, like Uncharted, won't age great but I think The Order 1886 and Ryse are the two who take the throne on aging horribly, since in both games the most impressive part was the Graphics. I would have to take The Order as #1 since Ryse is available on PC and offers much higher graphical fidellity and options on that platform.

Games that will age well like Persona, Zelda and stuff are obvious choices and I have to give a shoutout to Ratchet and Clank and Sunset Overdrive because good gameplay and humour never gets old. I would have to give the throne to Inside however for the game that will age the best.

This. However, I think Uncharted will age fine as long as you use the cell shade mode XD

Some Zelda games have aged poorly due to control or jaggy graphics, but breath of the wild might buck the trend. The only 3d one I still played years later and enjoyed about as much was wind waker hd

I am Iron Man

These games won't age well
Gears 4
UC4
Zelda BTW
3DS Pokémon games
Telltale games
Metal Gear Solid V the Phantom Pain
Splatoon
Bloodborne
Killer Instinct
There are more I can't think of right now.
