it sure does............so you excited for the new Xbox Portable?

Well, no. But the point here is that it's very shortsighted of you to rule out things that have a 0% probability of happening. You are too biased.

indeed, since apparently my previous argument was "Nintendo is the best!!!"

Yeah numbers are meaningless but either way they're still good. Obviously legs more important but you can't deny the launch is good.

I made a thread at launch about how quite it felt but now weeks later I see that Nintendo are going for the slow burn and treating this much more like they did with the DS, in fact I'd even go as far to say the dock is just a gimmick to get the home console crowd and hardcore Nintedoers to get used to the idea of having handhelds only in the future.

You mean that thread where you plugged your ears and then said, "Wow, it's so quiet"?

I revived this thread from the depths of hell precisely because the same theory is still being contemplated 8 years later.

We all now know how successful the Switch OG was, and we all know that it was a success.

Perhaps we should all reflect on our mistakes here and learn from history.

I’m not sure if I’d go as far as to say launch figures are “meaningless,” though OP is totally correct. Whether a system is “sold out” at launch isn’t a perfect indicator of long-term success. Had the Switch not seen a strong line-up of first-party titles, then it would’ve cratered similar to the Wii U.

edit: to clarify, I am aware this thread is from 2017, though it def does seem relevant to the current situation.

I got a quarter through this thread before my brain stopped automatically reading Switch as Switch 2. Jesus we need a parody thread of all the Switch 2 doom and gloom.

This is quite the necro...

The ridiculous claims about Switch 2 are not in the past tense
They are ongoing and will continue to grow exponentially after launch.

But this thread is an important example of the past

Honestly, the OP wasn't entirely wrong. I've noticed that its common for Nintendo systems to sell like crazy during launch period no matter how unsuccessful the console would end up being, it didn't only happen for the Wii U. The Gamecube and N64 when they launched had huge console sales during its launch period but both systems would end up selling underwhelmingly.

The reason behind this is obvious, the fans who buy the system during the launch period are far from representative of the market you need to attract to make your game system successful, which is the more casual market who doesn't wait til midnight to pre-order a console or go on forums debating about console sales. The time period that really proved when a Nintendo system is successful or not is post launch period once the hardcore gamers got their system and now they're attempting to get the more casual gamers, the Gamecube, Wii U, and N64 did great at capturing the more hardcore fanbase at launch but failed to be appealing enough in the long run to appeal to the more casual gamers.

However, for Switch 2 I highly doubt you need to even wait post launch to see if it'll do successful. This launch is projected to far exceed any other console launch Nintendo has ever had and its not even close, Switch 2 launch projections expect the system to sell between 6-8 Million in its first 3 days, over HALF of the Wii U's lifetime sales in its first weekend and it took the Switch 1 a few months to even reach 6 Million, it'll be hard to picture a console doing underwhelming after having a crazy start like Switch 2 is expected to have.
