OK, I read the comments @ reddit... the cloud symbol and download was just for the BotW update not the save data.

So it looks like the original IGN article is wrong, there is no cloud, just that Nintendo repair did the save data transfer.
Even that is still in doubt since the owner doesn't remember his old serial number.

Well – today there are things like checksums. Don't know which cloud backup you used, but this shouldn't happen at all. Only possibility: the data was already corrupted on the device...

yeah must have been a shitty cloud service then. I had never a corrupted savegame since I'm using cloud saving. It's more of a backup anyway.

I still find it strange there is no way to transfer save data. Seems like a mistake on Nintendo. Hopefully they remedy this problem soon, with cloud storage not locked behind paid online or putting it on a micro sd.
