User scores need to be done right for them to work. The user has to be a confirmed owner of the product, then the user score becomes better than the professional critics.

In Metacritic anyone can score, we all know this is not what Nintendo ment by "user" scores

Logically Nintendo is right, actual user opinion is the only important one, it's the ones that buy and play it that must be happy first and formost

As it is, they're maningless. There're a lot of "hate" zeroes.

I have absolutely never played a game that was absolutely perfect, so I immediately dismiss any 10/10 ratings. Similarly, I have incredibly seldom encountered games that are absolutely worthless, so I immediately discredit any 0/10 ratings unless it's a unanimous rating.

I think if every 10/10 and 0/10 were thrown out, what is left would mostly tell the tale to be quite honest.

My most favorite games throughout my entire life I wouldn't dream of giving 10/10 to. 9.5/10, sure. Hell, even 'Desert Bus' or whatever I'd have to rate a 2/10 just because it was so ludicrous that it made me laugh. A game would have to not even work at all to get a 0/10 from me.

If you dismiss all 10s and 0s you end up with 9s and 1s as your new 10s and 0s. And you need to dismiss them too. Well, in the end all games are a 5.

EDIT: At second thought: I could live with every game being a 5. Would bring people to read more of a review than the score.

Both are present, a lot of meaningless zeroes and a lot of meaningless tens. It would all work, if it was the same for every game. But certain games get more troll scores than others.

Lots of user reviews because a lot of zelda FANBOYS got so many free time on their hands.

Here's the thing about business, if it critically favors them, its fuel for their campaign. Its truly about what it means to you. Aggregate scores does give a good view of critically acclaimed productions for your viewing. You may or may not like it but chances are higher than others by popular opinion.

Review scores are worthless on their own. Even metacritic's unless people read what reviewers have to say about the game and see if they would actually like to play it.

"I haven't played the garm but 0/10 because is overrated" and "pls halp make score better 10/10" are not good metrics to gauge how people actually feel about the game and Nintendo should know better.

So what do you think, was Nintendo right and user scores on Meta are meaningful?

Yes, they are meaningful - but not just after release. There's a considerable wave of people trolling the BotW page with 0 scores at the moment. In a few months, that will probably have leveled out as those people find something new to hate.

Long story short, I expect BotW's user score to pull up above 8 again eventually.

I think the biggest problem with user scores is the illogical nature of how people use their review to balance the overall score. If someone thinks that overall user score should be lower, they'll vote a 0 to get it closer to what they think it should be. Vice versa for those who think it should be higher.
