Forums - Nintendo - Does the Switch Dock Need A Redesign?

Unless they plan on releasing a Switch with a proper scratch-resistant screen; then yes.

I personally think part of the design of the dock is to get a good seat with the USB C connection. There is very little room to plug it in at a bit of an angle thus eventually widening the female connection and ending up with a sloppy connection (as has happened with 3 out of my four DS4 controllers which I now have a hard time charching ).

I'm also in the camp they could have used more minimalistic dock like Sony Vita, equivalent (or smaller) "footprint" to "toaster".

OR simple modification of existing design is soft plastic "bumpers" to ensure dock touches tablet's EDGE and not screen itself.
That is also a possible DIY solution, potentially better than "cloth" which can collect dust/grit which can still scratch screen.
EDIT: Same effect can be had by installing same "bumper" rail on tablet itself to ensure edges "stick up" above screen itself.
EDIT2: That would also protect screen from scratches when you place the tablet face-down on surface while un-docked.

BIg fan of the wii U gamepad dock.

It is so open yet holds the gamepad so well. I can just drop it in and it works fantastic.

Exactly, it's weird that they didn't think to do something similar with the Switch... but you never know, maybe they're working on a new dock as we speak!

The new improved dock will only cost $120!

I know I shouldn't have been "that guy" I just couldn't resist...

Even if they were Canadian dollars that's ridiculous... in fact, it's so ridiculous that it just might work! Quick, get on the phone to Reggie! Tell him to lose the plastic and start all manufacturing in Canada!

I am curious why the dock is designed as it is. Why does it need two walls?

Afraid of it falling? You only need one wall.

You aren't actually protecting the screen, and infact you could be damaging it (mostly by accident but still). Plus you can still do that with one wall.

Exactly, just make the Switch slant back slightly to rest on the back wall and we're sorted... or even better, don't even have a wall, I wouldn't exactly call what the Wii U dock has a wall, more of a little ledge for it to lean onto, and it works perfectly!

The only reason I find to this dock design is to give it a more "home-consoley" design, something like "it's not a handheld plugged to the TV"...

Is it really scratching the screen? If it's really happening and it's not because of misuse, then it's a true design flaw.

It is, but its worse with some docks than others.

If you look at them from the side view, some of them arnt "straight" they bend inwards, makeing getting the switch in and out is more difficult.

Anyways a screenprotector (8-10$) + felt pads (1-5$), and its fixed.

You can also get the "bent" dock, to be stretched to normal, by leaveing a fat book in it, that ll keep it more like normal, and then useing a heat gun to make it set like that.

Its most like a lottery production thingy, not all docks are made right.

Same with the joy-cons, the left one has some "hand soldered" work, and those that dont work are usually just a worker that didnt do it quite right.

Sadly, this is the problem with many of my girlfriends over the years.

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!

How are people scratching their screens on it? There are things on the inside that prevent the screen from their touching anything.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

This exists for $12.99:

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

That's great for playing in table top mode or charging the unit...but theres no hdmi out to do tv play with that stand.
