Forums - Nintendo - The Concerns are gone, there's only space for greatness now

Why is that in doubt? Switch is Nintendo's only generation 9 platform, so they will give it their all and also cut the price aggressively if that should be necessary. Switch is also in good position to take the lionshare of Japan's third party support. That's not going to happen immediately in 2017 because third parties are always cautious about putting their weight behind Nintendo platforms, but since Nintendo needs Switch to sell, they are going to make it sell; and that's how the third party support will come.

How is the Switch a gen 9 console?

It's competing with gen 8 consoles. It's underpowered compared to its competitors as well, so it can't be a matter of hardware power. Or do you consider it a gen 9 console because it's the successor to the Wii U? Then that would mean you consider each successive Nintendo console to be a new gen. In which case that would make it Nintendo's 8th home console, since the Color TV was their first, the NES their second, then the SNES, all the way to the Switch being their 8th.

I consider the Switch as pretty much Nintendo's second 8th gen console. Not something unheard of, considering the SG-1000, SG1000-II and Master System from Sega, and the Atari 2600 and 5200.

I highly doubt that they haven't done R&D on a 3DS successor, even if they don't release it they probably already have looked into it. It would probably hurt them a lot, but with how everyone goes on about how much they have in the bank, they would probably be able to do it.

There is always R&D on new hardware, but new hardware means nothing without software. Right now Nintendo's intention is clearly that Switch is supposed to succeed both their home console and handheld, so their software development is planned accordingly. And since software development takes ~2 years, it's not feasible to change course on a whim.

If Switch struggles to sell, Nintendo will be aggressive like with the 3DS. The 3DS got back on track. What speaks for Switch is better first party support, so if the 3DS managed a turnaround, Switch will as well. The chances that Switch will go the way of the Wii U are miniscule. I'd actually call them non-existent, but that might come across as too confident. If you don't believe that, you can take your time anyway and watch how Switch performs and what Nintendo announces as their 2018 lineup.

The thing is, I don't know what to want. I don't want it to sell well and for Nintendo to get complacent, but I also don't want it to not sell well and have poor third party support.

It's gen 9 because it's the successor to Wii U and 3DS, and the mess that is lumped together as generation 2 isn't worth untangling because nobody has done it for over 20 years. Besides, as long as the Dreamcast is regarded as gen 6 (and it should be), Switch has to be gen 9. The DC succeeded gen 5's Saturn and it's still considered gen 6 despite spending the majority of its life competing with gen 5 consoles.

If the Switch is considered a new gen simply because it's the successor to the Wii U, then the Wii U was a new gen because it succeeded the Wii, which succeeded the Gamecube, etc... All the way to Nintendo's first console. Making the Switch a gen 8 console. ^_-

Color TV-> NES---> SNES---->N64----->Gamecube------>Wii------->Wii U-------->Switch.

Concerns for Zelda itself were never especially high. Concerns for the Switch itself, haven't changed for me, at all.

There are a bunch of games announced, including many indie titles I'd likely be interested in. But we need more than indie games. We need to hear about/see some GOOD third party releases, most importantly a few exclusives. We need to see MORE from Nintendo themselves. FE Warriors might be neat, and that Mario game could have promise, depending on what it actually is. But personally, I need to see a LOT more, and especially, I need to see long-term support, both first AND third party, for the system. I need to see what the hell Retro has been working on all this time. I need some other exclusives to get excited about, not just a Zelda game I'm already getting on Wii U, and a Mario game that may or may not be amazing.

So no. The system, to me, is still very much a mystery, and I'm pretty much never going to be happy about certain things like paid online, battery life, etc. I may well wind up getting one. But I am hopeful they are VERY forthcoming with a lot of NEW info on the system's future releases, come E3.

This explains it. NES was third gen. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_console

I consider it the 9th gen, but I suppose you could lump it in with 8th gen. - To me it's not that important.
The 1st generation hardware was the Magnavox, Color TV-Game.
The 2nd generation was Intellivision, Atari 2600, Coleco Vision.
3rd Generation was the NES, Sega Master System.
4th: SNES, Megadrive.
5th: Nintendo 64, Playstation 1, Saturn.
6th: Playstation 2, Xbox, Gamecube, Dreamcast.
7th: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii.
8th: Xbox One, Playstation 4, Wii U.
9th: Switch.

Nintendo essentially skipped the 2nd gen hardware.

Basically... The Leap in graphics between 1st and 2nd gen was:

To (2nd gen):

And then we got the NES (3rd Gen):

To the SNES (4th Gen):

Really hope the Switch does well

I will be picking one up eventually, but need to wait for more games to come out first..

Zelda is good = there are still no questions, concerns, or problem?

Did anyone that was actually being realistic expect Zelda to be bad?

Not to mention most of that read like a PR statement someone would read after announcing they are running for President.

Zelda is like Dark Souls. When its shit its still better than pretty much any other game.

My only concern is having no money for the Switch.

Does that also mean concerns for wiiu are gone now?
