There is always R&D on new hardware, but new hardware means nothing without software. Right now Nintendo's intention is clearly that Switch is supposed to succeed both their home console and handheld, so their software development is planned accordingly. And since software development takes ~2 years, it's not feasible to change course on a whim. If Switch struggles to sell, Nintendo will be aggressive like with the 3DS. The 3DS got back on track. What speaks for Switch is better first party support, so if the 3DS managed a turnaround, Switch will as well. The chances that Switch will go the way of the Wii U are miniscule. I'd actually call them non-existent, but that might come across as too confident. If you don't believe that, you can take your time anyway and watch how Switch performs and what Nintendo announces as their 2018 lineup. |
The thing is, I don't know what to want. I don't want it to sell well and for Nintendo to get complacent, but I also don't want it to not sell well and have poor third party support.
