Seems like all the delays were worth the wait. Congrats Nintendo!!!! I will definitely pick this up whenever I decide to get a NS.

I understand why it scored as well as it did, but i was never able to get into GTA4. It just didn't click with me.
Conversely, i thought GTA5 was excellent.

Have you ever wondered why that happens so often? Could it possibly be because these games are actually brilliant? I mean... just look back. Tri Force Heroes scored 73. New Super Mario Bros. U scored 84. A Link Between Worlds scored 91, Super Mario 3D World scored 93. Some of those are good scores, maybe great, even. But far from being unanymous perfect 10's across the board. The reason for that, is because these games were simply not unanymously praised. They weren't as good. Most mainline Zelda games score around 95 because they are actually amazing games. That much is very objective. Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword - they are all fantastic games with great soundtracks, amazing level design and captivating stories. They are all much, much better than most games out there. Still, Breath of the Wild scored above that range. Do you really think it's "just because it's Zelda"? Is it that hard to see how amazing the game truly is? |
It happens often because its Zelda, the games are good but they aren't the best thing to grace the Earth like reviewers seen to think. They lack a bunch of things other games have like deep engaging stories, properly developed leveling systems, cutting edge graphics and mostly have very simple gameplay mechanics (more specifically combat mechanics for Zelda games, they are well polished but simple). They are incredibly fun to play tough but any shortcomings are completly overlooked.
Zelda and Mario games start from a much higher score than other games, the game would have to be a complete piece of shit to get like an 80, reviewers are definetly not objective when reviewing these games, or rather they are willing to let a lot of things slide and focus only on the pros.
Well GTA IV had everything to get these scores, just One thing was missing : the fun and the variery, it really amazed me to be bored by à GTA.
Whîle GTA V is the second best GTA for me
Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:
PS4: 17m XB1: 10m WiiU: 10m Vita: 10m

It's even more silly as the game is still regarded to be a great game, divisive doesn't mean bad but some people are trying to paint it that way, all great games have criticisms.
It seems reviewers have the mission to save the Switch and Nintendo with artificialy inflated scores... nothing new, or unexpected.
I don´t think it will translate to big sales or main stream access. Zelda is not what it used to be.

Yet... the things you mentioned are none essential for a game to be great. Does a game need to have properly developed leveling systems to be great? Or cutting edge graphics, really? Simple gameplay mechanics... there's nothing wrong with being simple, if they're intuitive and well polished (no wonder Smash is currently the 2nd biggest fighting game in the world). "Deep engaging stories" is the only argument you have going here, but in my opinion at least, some Zelda games nail this very well. I thought Skyward Sword had the best story in any game I've played, with memorable characters and moments everywhere. They might not be as well-developed and complex as the stories in other games, but that doesn't mean they're any less compelling - just like the gameplay mechanics, there's nothing wrong with simple. |
While I wouldn't call it the best story I've seen in a videogame, Skyward Sword's story was the best at motivating me to keep playing. The friendship between Link and Zelda was so well done that I didn't care about the lack of a mcguffin rewards at the end of the dungeons, because searching for Zelda was motivation enough.
