Why don't they just admit Switch is the successor. Why would I want two portable nintendo consoles.....

Because 3DS and 3DS are still selling good and they want to keep that regardless Switch, so they currently saying Switch isn't successor to 3DS.

Does that mean the Switch won't be getting a proper pokemon game?

Of Course not, Pokemon Company confirms support for NX few months ago.

It will probably be contingent on the Switch's performance. If the Switch does well, we probably won't see another dedicated handheld from Nintendo for a while. If it does poorly, we can probably see an "HDS" (for lack of a better name) announced some time within the next two years.

Im 100% convinced we will see a revision in roughly 1.5 years (the time frame in which GBA/DS/3DS each had their first revisions) that is smaller (5" screen, Vita size), cheaper ($199), longer battery life (3.5-7 hours) & portable only (cant plug in dock, no detachable controls).

By this time 3DS sales & support will be minimal so they will effectively be able to market this device as the 3DS successor. I also think we can see other revisions like a TV only, microconsole form factor also for $199 and a moderately enhanced model (think GB to GBC, DS to DSi, 3DS to N3DS) with a 1080p screen that has equel performance to the docked mode of the original model, sold at $299 to replace the original model.

Totaly agree.

People here don't understand than a 300$ system with 60$ games and an online subscription can't replace the 3DS.

Nintendo need a sub 200 handheld. It's the 3DS until a successor or a huge switch price cut.

None of the Switch games showns looks like handheld games. NIntendo did not add a retro compatibility with the 3DS.

The popular 3DS (the XL) launched at $200 and done  very well. The Switch will likely be $250 by next Christmas (2018)

A portable exclusive remodel with a smaller screen and form factor, removal of excessive batteries (Joycons),  no grip/wrist straps, no dock/hdmi and a gimped X1 chip will easily hit $200.

In regards to games you do realise that many of 3DS titles do not look like portable games when comparing to the previous generation of DS games. The biggest games of its inception were street fighter 4, Ocarina of Time, Mario world, Mario Kart, kid Icarus and Monster Hunter Tri.

I dont see how thats different from Zelda, bomba man, Arms, Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8, Mario odyssey, Dragon Quest Xi, a retrosryle RPG from Square, a shit ton of 2D indie games and smaller titles like puyo puyo, disegea 5 etc

And they dont need to introduce a whole new platform in order to be flexible with Switch game prices. But equally a 3DS successor would inevitably see a big jump in the scale and cost developing most titles.

Funny kimishima and here on this site, we have ppl asking if we shouldv not criticized this guy. If switch is indeed gon have that "unified library", why not just stay honest? At least honest statement will win you your 3ds fanbase.

I still think it's amazing how some people think Nintendo would risk their whole company to try and recapture the market they couldn't get last gen. It's mind blowing bizarre.

There WILL be a 3DS sucessor. Wether it's its own thing or a more portable switch (won't be called switch mini or anything if the switch isn't a sucess) i don't know. But no one in their right mind in an execute management position would withdraw from their main market to just focus on their secondary, failed one. It would be complete suicide.

Switch is a handheld already

The switch only works at full power with the shell and a TV. The battery lasts 3 hours and it's too big to fit a pocket. How is that a portable?

Nintendo have admitted it and anyone with eyes can see that the switch is a home console.

This is like saying the PS4 is a portable because of Vita remote play.

There is not gonna be a 3DS successor,  if something there will be a more portable version of Switch, but that's it.

It's portable because it's portable, you can take it out of the house. It's portability isn't the greatest sure, but that doesn't mean it isn't portable. Original 3DS also has crappy battery life and the 2DS doesn't fit in your pocket, but they're still portable.

Anyone with eyes can also see that it's portable and that one could use it purely as such.

Those are two seperate systems. The PS4 itself isn't portable.

Nintendo just meant the next game device.

When asked about a next-gen portable, Kimishima starting out by saying that Switch and 3DS can co-exist. After all, the two devices have many differences in terms of elements such as form factor, weight, price, and games. Kimishima believes 3DS can be appealing for parents to purchase as their first gaming system for their children because of those factors. He concluded by saying that there is a different demand and market for 3DS as a portable system from Switch, and for a next handheld, Nintendo will keep considering it as always.

Nintendo’s Shinya Takahashi chimed in as well. About a new portable, he explained that Nintendo is always thinking about its next game device, so the answer is “We are always thinking about it” rather than there is or there isn’t a 3DS successor.
