Forums - Gaming - In theory could switch have a more powerful dock released

If a dock like this was released, it would defeat the purpose of the Switch. So, it could happen but it simply won't.

Nintendo has had some confusing and mixed messaging already. Imagine throwing this in?

Is it possible that Nintendo could release a special dock that would enable the switch to play more powerful games exclusively on the TV? I am really hoping for a new and powerful Nintendo home console and I just hope the reason they didn't show that many games is because they are going to reveal this power dock with a handful of exclusive games at E3.

No.

I know, I wont get my hopes up. And I am not talking about the Dock it is releasing with in march. I am just asking if it's possible to increase the power of the switch one day via the dock. You know, like the N64 expansion pack did. So like maybe an expansion dock. Or something.

It's not possible.

Yes, it is possible and probably will be in the future. Nintendo tested this idea and has a patent on it.

A patent is the protection of an "idea". Tech companies tend to patent various configurations and ideas even if they have zero intention on using it, it's a good defense to defend yourself against litigation for example.

Ergo. A patent is not a guarentee for anything.

according to Nintendo's patent it is definitely possible

there is a really cool rumor/speculation analysis here:

giving false hope to people... that's the job of the hired PR people in each company, we should be better than this

possible? only if the switch's usb-c connector is connected up in a way that it'll allow for pcie handoff, there are two problems with this.
1) it wont be, because it would add significant cost to the handheld
2) it would cause huge disparity between handheld mode and docked mode.

Don't get your hopes up with pipe dreams.

Ummm, the odds that they would just release an actual home console in 2 to 3 years is far more likely and would be so much easier to get running correctly, and it wouldn't blacken their eye by having games that could only run in docked mode...

Hold out for that.

Can't happen.
There is a thing called "Bandwidth" that is required. USB doesn't have enough.

Plus, USB has a ton of overhead with it's potocol encoding and is a high-latency bus, which will result in a ton of frame pacing and microstutter.

It's also why the PC has never bothered with serious multi-GPU solutions over USB and opts for PCI-E or an interconnect that piggy-backs off PCI-E like thunderbolt.

Patents are also not a guarentee for anything, for obvious reasons.

Yes, it's possible but not currently ideal. Sure, docked games will run better but then you have to think, how will undocked games run :-/

The same?

Most switch games are currently 720p when docked and lack AA. A switch + wouldn't have to effect current versions of games in order to implement 1080p and advance AA solutions.

Im curious as to whether its possible for switch to use dock for 4k output, on face value it would only need a 2tflop Gpu which is relatively cheap.

OP: No chance of a dock being used to play exclusive games, if you want power and most third party titkes get a PS4/Xbox One/Pc...

Nintendo are currently the only ones who can actually offer native 4k on their games with an affordable GPU.

Is it possible yes it is. Is it a feasible hope that they would do it, no. Especially if they are going to wait a few years it probably will not happen. Especially considering such a product would be expensive to make, expensive to buy and the return in power would be minimal since they would have a bottle neck in terms of the port.

It would be better for Nintendo and the consumers in the long run if they release a more powerful version of the switch. (Much like they did the 3DS, DS, and Gameboy lines.) nVidia had already stated that the custom chip they made for Nintendo is scaleable. (Which usually means they can make it more powerful if needed.)

No cause afaik, there is no cpu/gpu inside the dock. And I m sure Nintendo will make it mandatory for games to work in both portable and docked mode since that is its most unique feature.

If this's true, that's made me have another question.

If the dock is nothing more than a simple usb c connector to connect to HDMI and AC adapter, can we have a "docklike" performance simply by charging it? I mean it should be the same right?

A handheld gamer only (for now).
