Forums - Gaming - In theory could switch have a more powerful dock released

Is it possible that Nintendo could release a special dock that would enable the switch to play more powerful games exclusively on the TV? I am really hoping for a new and powerful Nintendo home console and I just hope the reason they didn't show that many games is because they are going to reveal this power dock with a handful of exclusive games at E3.

Do we know enough about how the dock interacts with the tablet? Can you provide information in the OP please?

supposedly usb c

Grasping at straws here lol

No cause afaik, there is no cpu/gpu inside the dock. And I m sure Nintendo will make it mandatory for games to work in both portable and docked mode since that is its most unique feature.

I know, I wont get my hopes up. And I am not talking about the Dock it is releasing with in march. I am just asking if it's possible to increase the power of the switch one day via the dock. You know, like the N64 expansion pack did. So like maybe an expansion dock. Or something.

It is easily possible. They just need to release a dock with actual hardware and use the tablet for the data.

I don't see this coming though. They're already willing to compromise on frames and graphics for one of their most high profile games.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Highly improbable, IMO, cos you would need an incredible amount of bandwidth to make this connection work well between the switch and the dock. USB C has a maximum transfer rate of 10Gb/s, normal ps4 has a bandwidth of 140 GB/s (1.120 Gb/s). To make it work, nintendo would have to completely transfer the hardware to the dock and use the Switch as a glorified memory card/card reader. Can't see they doing this, the cost would be HUGE and still way below PS4/XBO level (so, moot point). Also, with PS4 Pro already out and Scorpio around the corner, Nintendo would be shooting themselves (again) in the foot if they intend to enter an arms race with Sony/MS.

Despite all that, Switch is shaping up to be very nice (FE and Mario Kart, how can that not be good?) and with japanese portable market going strong, can't see it flopping. Of course, if you're looking for power and couch gaming on current gen level, better look somewhere else. To me, PS3/WiiU level games on a portable is good enough. Also, Nintendo's only chance of doing well in this gen (again, IMO).

Yes, it's possible but not currently ideal. Sure, docked games will run better but then you have to think, how will undocked games run :-/

Yes, it is possible and probably will be in the future. Nintendo tested this idea and has a patent on it.

Theoretical possible? Yeah. But I doubt such a dock will be released this year. It may happen in two or three years, if at all.
