Forums - Nintendo - Will the paywall kills Splatoon ?

Charging for online play is a very bad idea on Nintendo's part. When it launches, there will be,what, two games that have any kind of meaningful online play? Nintendo doesn't have dozens of shooters and whatnot on their console, they can't justify selling online play as a premium service. I very much hope they rethink this plan.

Online is free for 7 months.

Nintendo is the only company that can justify an online service. By dozens of shooters do you mean the yearly CoD? Not sure if MS/Sony helps out with Activision's and EA's server costs.

Nintendo has the biggest racing game and fighting game in the industry and Splatoon is set to overtake Halo. Who knows what will happen to Pokemon on a home console (mmo)? What does Sony and MS need those online fees for? Halo, Forza and Gears barely add up to 20m. Does Sony even make online multiplayer games?

The other biggies are all 3rd party. Switch is confirmed to be getting Minecraft and Fifa. I don't think CoD (or GTA5) are out of the question either. Maybe people should ask how Sony can justify a subscription when Nintendo offers all the big 3rd party online games as well as the biggest 1st party online games too.

Nintendo can't justify the price being $50, it isn't close to the same quality of service as Live or PSN.

The paywall hasn't affected any other system, has it? Not significantly at least. It's the kind of thing that people complain about for a while, then it happens, people grudgingly accept it, and it isn't spoke about again

Its not just the quality of thé online, its also thé quality of te services ( liké for example NES games offered for only One Month ) and thé number of online games , it will bé very low on Switch compared to PS4 and One

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

Depends on 2 things.
The price and the quality of the online.
If it's just a little cheaper than Sony and Microsoft and a substantial improvement over the Wii U, I think fans are willing to stomach the price a little but more.
But they'll really have to make it worth it.

About the original comment that the Nintendo audience is more sophisticated... That person is just  being arrogant plain and simple.

Nah, yal just have poor reading comprehension.

I can see some rethinking their purchase. Many have mentioned than xbox live and psn pay wall didn't hurt call of duty.

Xbox and psn have lots of online games and perks for subscription fees. I'll hold off on Nintendo online until they show me I'll have more than 3 or 4 games with full fledged online modes.
