Whether you like it or not, this is being marketed as a home console experience you can take on the go, just because you can *gasp* take it on the go, doesn't mean it's not a home console anymore, a home console doesn't strictly have to be a powerful box that connects to your TV. 3rd parties in-general also aren't strictly the big AAA power-hungry western studios, the Japanese 3rd parties, who don't typically put graphics first, will likely flock to the Switch, much like the 3DS and the Vita, the latter getting a lot of the same games as the PS4 did. I doubt you will see many AAA western games unless the Switch becomes so sucessful they're willing to drop a load of money to port it, but you'll see a boatload of Japanese support.

As for your latter arguments, yes, mobile HW has naturally evolved since then, but do you really think ANY company can put out a portable PS4 that is affordable, doesn't generate a lot of heat to melt it and can sustain a bearable battery life? It's simply impossible for any company to do that, especially back when the Switch started development a few years back. Further more, it's certainly more powerful than the Wii U, gigaflops aren't the end all-be all numbers that determine what it can't and cannot do. Heck, power doesn't even determine the sucess of a console anyways, just like it doesn't determine if it's a home console or not. If you want a beefcake of a console, just go buy a PS4/X1, you already have 2 options to choose from if you're looking only for that.

So what you're saying to defend your mobile HW aspect is that it can't handle PS4 like HW because of problems that're related to handheld consoles. Hmm...

Well yeah, because as stated many times and shrugged off by you, it's a hybrid

Its a hybrid. Both a home and handheld console

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Besides, since 1990
The " TurboExpress" handheld could connect to a tv, we have never called that a home console.

"Since 1828".... Hum, there weren't any video games there....

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handheld_game_console

handheld game console is a small, portable self-contained video game console with a built-in screen, game controls, and speakers.[1]Handheld game consoles are smaller than home video game consoles and contain the console, screen, speakers, and controls in one unit, allowing people to carry them and play them at any time or place.[2][3]

IT IS A HANDHELD.

Chill. I simply missed the word home. Read too fast

This is definitely up for debate however, this is Nintendo getting ahead of the game imo. Yeah, it's nowhere near as powerful as PS or XB but mark my words, in the future, when graphical capability has hit a snag and is stagnated, a device like Switch will be on top. It's not quite there yet, it's going through its growing pains, but a hybrid device, one that you can play on the go and at home is the future of gaming. Nintendo should just keep adopting this model from here on out. It also aids them in software development. And that's why I think Nvidia said they plan to work with Nintendo for the next couple of decades.

I seriously hope not.

Why? Couldn't it be the way of the future?

the power argunent makes no sense, so Wii wasnt a home console because it was alot weaker?

Wii couldn't be played portably, in fact the entire concept basically required a living room since you can't exactly waggle around in a car, airplane, train, bus, most places in public (unless you want to get arrested). It was a home console using home components, just a casual-oriented one as such hardware power didn't matter as much.

Switch is not really that. It's a portable form factor with portable components, and LCD screen, a battery, and so on.

It would more like if instead of making the Wii, Nintendo made only the DS but included a dock with the DS that allowed DS games to play on the TV screen. If people looked at that and said "Nintendo is going portably only basically", I'd tend to agree.

The Switch reveal has confirmed this, and how I believe this is because Nintendo knows it can't compete with Sony or Microsoft anymore. They don't have the 3rd parties, the online infrastructure, the fanbase, ect. Now I'm sure I'm going to have people say "OH, THE SWITCH IS A HYBRID, ITS TECHNICALLY A HOME CONSOLE AND HANDHELD!!!" Let me say one thing: The switch is a handheld console, that has a dock in order to make it look like a home console as well. Lets just look at the specs for example. For $299, you're getting a console that is around double the power of the Wii U, so roughly 1/3-1/2 the power of the XB1 (which is also $299). Now this looks bad enough, but when we look at 8.5 gen consoles (Scorpio and PS4Pro), the gap is even larger. Now I'm going to assume the Scorpio launches at $399, just like the Pro. For $100 more, you get consoles which are 6 and 8 times more powerful than the Switch, and both are likely to see price cuts as well. If the PS4Pro is 349 for the holidays, are you seriously telling me the gap in power is only worth $50? These specs sound more like a console that is primarily a handheld than a home console. If its half a generation behind the XB1 and PS4, than it definently is in trouble with the PS4Pro and Scorpio. Now you could argue specs don't matter, and thats true - to a certain extent.

However, when the gap is this large, its definently a problem. The Switch will definently struggle to get 3rd parties, and ultimately fail if its treated like a home console. If its treated more like a handheld, it has a far better chance. Now you could very well argue against me, but Nintendo is looking to put 3DS games on it, and says that they won't be replacing the Wii U with anything else. So Nintendo fans can treat this as whatever they think it is, but Nintendo from now on will make handheld consoles and mobile games, and that is it. The era of true home consoles for Nintendo is over; they already blew it with the Wii U, and I just don't see them ever recovering from it.

You're ugly man. Stop taking it out on Nintendo. Scorpio can not be savior.

No offense to Japanese devs, but where are all these "Japanese console games" for the Switch?

Cause I ain't seeing shit right now. Where's Resident Evil 7? Tekken 7? Any Final Fantasy coming? Why not Metal Gear Solid V? Dragon Quest Heroes is based off the PS Vita version.

Except for Dragon Quest, you listed a bunch of games that were westernized. (well RE7 finally went back to its roots)

But the Jap AAA games these days are hardly jap games. They are western games now.

You need to look at Nintendo's intentions as well, and not just whether you define it as a home console that's portable, or a portable that can be docked.

The Switch comes with the dock and a "controller". These are bundled in and you're forced to buy them.
So they do still have aspirations towards home consoles, or else those would be sold separately.

The "dock" and "controller" are mostly just plastic accessories that probably cost next to nothing to manufacture.

What does that have to do with the publisher putting the game on the system or not? RE7 is still being released in Japan for the PS4 last time I checked.
