Forums - Nintendo - How are 2 Joycons being $79.99 overpriced when 2 PS Move controllers are $99.99!?

Because it's only overpriced when Nintendo does it. I bet many of these people complaining about the $299 price tag for instance were perfectly fine for spending $499-$599 USD on the PS3 back in the day..

Don't get me wrong, I DO find the joycons overpriced, just saying..

Not a soul was cool with the $500-600 pricetag, regardless of what they claimed.

You're overlaying it a bit, it has limited functionality because to actually use it while attached to the console you have to take one hand off of the console (thus be holding it and controlling it with just one hand), when in two player mode only one person actually gets to use the motion detection, when using pro controller you don't even get the IR camera, so again what you are getting is:

+HD rumble

+NFC

-headphone jack

-Touchpad

-Lightbar for positional tracking

-Analog triggers

-Internal speaker

What I'm getting at is, the pro controller is significantly more expensive than the ds4 and only (supposedly) enhances the rumble and adds NFC, with a trade off of missing other features, and even if you don't see the value of most of the missing features, analog triggers is a pretty major loss on its own.

Looking back to the joy cons again, even if you can use a single controller for one player input, it's still essentially half a controller, and not enough to play a fully featured retail game without a loss of control options, for a fully featured second controller the price is higher than a fully featured controller for Xbox one or PS4, that's the issue.

Hopefully it'll be a non issue though, as long as Nintendo allow third party manufacturers to release joy cons too we should see some without HD rumble and IR camera that are significantly cheaper.

First off, what features do you really need on which controller?

Only the Right Joy-Con Controller uses the IR Motion Sensor.  The IR Motion Sensors first usage are party games, where you only hold the right Joy-Con controller. Party games aren't and won't be designed for the use of the Pro Controller.

The missing analog Triggers on the Pro Controller are indeed a bummer and as I stated somewhere else, I don't understand Nintendo for not implementing it. This is just stupid by Nintendo.

- Headphone Jacket. I have no controllers which have a phone jacket in with the exception of the Wii U gamepad . So, I don't see it as a loss or missing feature, because most controllers don't have that. That the DS4 controller has one is good for the DS4 controller and people who actually want to use it. But who knows, maybe bluetooth headsets will be supported?  Which, I don't actually really believe in.

- Touchpad, uhm.. don't see a purpose in it. But what are we arguing about it here. You deny the features of the switch, but accept the features of the DS4?

- Lightbar for positional Tracking, again, the switch doesn't need this fancy stuff. So why mentioning it? There is no purpose for it.

- The Wii Remote had internal speaker, and imo were a waste of time and resources.

"and only (supposedly) enhances the rumble and adds NFC, with a trade off of missing other features, and even if you don't see the value of most of the missing features, analog triggers is a pretty major loss on its own."

"supposedly" is the wrong word it. Did you actually bother of informing yourself what this HD Rumble feature is capable off and how it works? It let's you "feel" textures. There are several tiny vibrators (is this the correct word?) placed inside the controller. While moving your hand like you would do on a wall, you will be able to feel certain roughness or softness thanks to the several tiny vibrators in it. And I suppose this is the most expensive technique in these controllers.

So, if you want to know why those controllers are so expensive, there you go, HD Rumble.

Yes, supposedly, because until I try it first hand all I am doing is taking someone else's word for it.

Supposedly is the correct word here.

In reality it's simply an enhanced rumble, and I find rumble to be a pointless feature in general, regardless of which console.

All it does is piss you off if you put the controller down to watch a long Cutscene and drastically reduce the battery life.

I'm also willing to bet that after the console releases and someone posts a teardown that HD rumble is essentially either just using three motors instead of two, with one mounted 90 degrees to the other two.

Or just two mounted in a fancy way.

Well, one thing being even more expensive doesn't make it any better. If there's some smartphone even more expensive than the iPhone, the iPhone will still remain overpriced nonetheless.

That said, I'm fine with the prices. I mean it's basically the price of a DS4 plus 20 bucks. I don't have a problem to pay 20 bucks extra but get a decent battery in return. Plus, with just one extra pair of those, I'm ready to rock 4-Player-Multiplayer and enjoy all that Mario Kart goodness.

One is a overpriced fundamental part of the console, the other an add on you have little need for.

You dont need Joy Cons either because you already own a pair with the system so technically speaking you will need to fork out $99 for PS Move controllers to play some games. You dont need to spend a cent if you already own a Switch.

How can someone tell me this? The Joycons are way more technologically advanced than the move controllers yet people are saying Nintendo are the ones selling overpriced accessories.

PS Move Controllers Price: https://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-Move-Motion-Controllers-Two-Pack/dp/B01LD7MR2C/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1485108610&sr=8-3&keywords=ps+move+controller

Joycon Controllers Price: https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Joy-Con-L-R-Gray/dp/B01N6QKT7H/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485108856&sr=8-1&keywords=joycon+controller

No one says they arent overpriced.

That doesnt really change the fact that the Joycons still are.

besides, you shoud be comparing joycons to the PS4 X1 main controllers, which is exactly what the Joycons are. Move controllers are optional, for a more niche market within the PS4 userbase.

Not really. Thats what the Pro controller is for. JoyCons are the standard accessory with the Switch which are free with your console purchase and there is no need to buy a 2nd pair unless your very unfortunate. Pro Controller should cost about the same as a PS4/X1 controller maybe less..

"Overprice fundamental part"?
You can play only using a Pro Controller and leave your joy-cons kept safe, if you want.

I don't think they're overpriced tbh. They're in line with a Wiimote price, for example. The only thing that bothered me was the dock. I don't quite get why it costs 90€.

Are we comparing the move to a mansion?

You are misunderstanding something here.

The PS Move is overpriced. It has very old tech inside of it that is currently inferior to the Wii Motion Plus controller/ The new Wii controllers with Wii Motion Plus built in. I believe those are cheaper as well. It has about 9 hours of battery life.

The Joycons are not. Based on everything presented and seen thus far they are high grade and have a lot of tech in it. I believe 2 cost the same as 2 Wii Motion Plus controllers. Its battery last for 20 hours

HOWEVER, the underlying issue is this:

- The PS Move controller largely optional to buy; I say optional because there are still some games that require its use. if you are buying the console it is not included thus the system overall is cheaper.

- The Joycons are bundled with the system. People are dissatisfied with the overall price of the Switch. Despite being reasonably priced. and instead of merely complaining that the added cost of the Joycons, some will take the extra step to say the Joycons are overpriced, despite it being fairly priced, as a means to cope with their frustration

So far there is only one game in existence that requires the Joycons and that is 1-2-Switch, how does that make them not optional? The case in which they are not optional is when you want to use the handheld but 2 are included anyway with the handheld which is all you need for that function.

Well 1-2 switch from what I've seen only uses 2 joycons at a time, which come with the system.

Arms, with local play can use 4 joycons. So Arms is the only game that requires one to purchase extra controllers.

Now in the future when Mario Kart 8 Deluxe comes that is another game that coudl use 4 controllers locally. Purchase those wheel casings like teh Wii game and pop in a joycon controller. (now of course people will say, who the hell uses that control method)

But just like Arms, Mario Kart 8 can use a standard controller.

For real. I didn't bother buying the ps3 until it dropped in price. I remember paying £300 and getting uncharted, LBP and heavenly sword with it.
