Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo is letting 3DS cannibalize Switch

I see this being similar to the GBA to DS transition.

In 2005 GBA had a new Zelda, Mario Party, Kirby, Yoshi, WarioWare, Pokemon Emerald, Fire Emblem, Donkey Kong, Mario.

In 2005 DS had a new Kirby, Yoshi, WarioWare, Pokemon Spinoff, Advance Wars, Nintendogs, Mario Kart, Mario & Luigi, Animal Crossing.

Don't complain. I've never gotten around to playing Gaiden, so a 3DS semi-remake is right up my alley.

I just want them to remix their soundtrack, too, including the ominous main theme that sounds nothing like the regular one.

Well... The switch is going to offer its own lineup of games but shit does hit the fan and it doesn't sell as well as expected, the 3ds sales will help carry the weight

The faith of Switch won't be determined by a couple of games. It will be determined by the overall value

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

A lot of people talked about that: Nintendo can't let the 3DS die immediately, they have to be sure that the Switch is viable before killing the alternative. And there is still a question mark about the future of the 3DS: will we see a full handheld successor?

It was obvious that they will still support their handheld. We don't know yet if they will stop doing that, and when. But new games announcements for the 3DS isn't a surprise anyway.

And to play Devils Advocate, thats somewhat normal for the transitioning period.I guess that 2017 will be the 3DS final year, in terms of support. After that we will see full support to the Switch(even though you could say that 80% of Nintendo efforts is already on Switch)

But see, this is what concerns me; what if they plan on keeping 3DS alive beyond 2017, or even making a successor to it?

The idea of having all Nintendo games on one platform instead of split between two was arguably the strongest proposition in Switch's favour, but Nintendo isn't acting like this is their plan.

Look at this from the perspective of Intelligent Systems.

You have an engine that has been perfected with Fates, why not use it for one last project?

For once, I'm with you curl. This is frustrating. Especially sonce Echoes is a 3ds exclusive. If it was on both systems and cross-buy, I'd have been ok with it, but this is sad.

You shouldnt worry then. Most of 3DS first party games are small projects.Yoshi is a port, Pikmin is a stupid 2D platformer, Echoes is  a project that was already long ways into development(and it seems that it wont even get retail, may be wrong), Warriors on 3DS was probably a way to convince more easily Koei to work on the project and make the game for Switch, and so on.As far as I know, the most ambitious project on it is Ever Oasis.

So dont worry. As a company, it makes sense for them to keep at least minimal support on the 3DS and ride the momentum it got from these last few months, but it will eventually die down and everyone will move to the Switch. As I see it, the 3DS is the cheap offering for people that wpouldnt pay 300 dollars for a system either way. This is a way to get money from them and keep them interested in Nintendo to, when the Switch gets more affordable, for them to make the switch.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

So wait, Nintendo supporting a device after all these years is bad?

So having Breath of the Wild for Wii U is fine....but not FE Warriors?

Im glad this 2 comments are at top! This sums up for me!

Pocky Lover Boy!

Did you not hear the part about the Switch getting an exclusive Fire Emblem gaming in 2018? Why can't both of them coexist. One of my IRL friend's actually thought Nintendo was going to drop 3DS support and was getting upset. For some people the battery life and form factor is enough of a reason for Nintendo to continue pushing the 3DS for another 2-3 years and let it die slowly.

Secondly, the Warriors franchise is not a system seller. Personally I can't stand them. The combat is just repetitive rather than skill based, and the animations are horrendous. The level design is flat and boring and most of the enemies die at the flick of the fingers. I'm a huge Fire Emblem fan and I might pass on this unless I hear good things. As a huge Zelda fan I hated Hyrule Warriors with a passion. I wanted the main story to be over with and I felt it was waaay too long. It should have ended before you took control of Ganondorf despite he was actually fun to play as. The adventure mode bit was really cool but I was bored after doing a 5 or 6 of the missions. It was all just the same stuff with a different twist. I'll admit that the game has a lot of content but it's just not for me. I got bored way too fast with it and it was just a mindless game that did not engage me in any shape or form. I'll admit that I don't understand the appeal of this series and I know very few people personally that enjoyed them, but obviously they do something right to get sequels and I know they are hugely successful in Japan.

TL;DR: They will both co-exist just fine, and the Warrior's franchise isn't mainstream enough to be considered a huge system seller. They would just be kicking themselves in the foot by not letting it be accessible. Some people will prefer that game as pure handheld title, and others prefer it on a TV. This is the right way to go about things.

So, Switch having to share Fire Emblem Warriors with the N3DS and 3DS getting a remake of Fire Emblem Gaiden means we'll get droughts? Switch isn't out yet and we already know of Fire Emblem Warriors for this year and a mainline Fire Emblem for 2018, yet the situation is comparable to the Wii U, which didn't get a single Fire Emblem game (mainline, remake or spin-off) during its entire life? I don't see it.

Last I checked first year the Wii U had two Nintendo titles, and one was Nintendo Land and the othe a 2D Mario.

I am pretty sure this year alone with just Arms, Zelda, Mario, Fire Emblem Warriors, Splatoon 2, and Mario Kart the console has a more productive year on first party than I think the Wii U ever had.

2014, arguably the best year of the Wii U's release history, had Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Hyrule Warriors, Smash, Captain Toad, and Bayonetta. Assuming that Nintendo releases no other 1st party games on the Switch this year and that Xenoblade comes out this year (which I am unsure about), the first year of the Switch is a equal to the best year of the Wii U.

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?
