Forums - Nintendo - Mario Odyssey is successor Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine, not to Galaxy and 3D Land/World

I doubt that we will have a hubworld in Odysee. I guess we will be able to move from one world directly to another one via that spaceship.

it's far closer in actual objectives and collecting stuff than 3d world which in my opinion is just a glorified 2.5d mario bros. It's still a good game, but everything screams mario bros from that game instead of 3d mario. The galaxy games where not like Super Mario Bros at all and where full 3d mario's and contained vastly complex worlds like SM64.

Objectives don't make it any closer to 64 or Sunshine because the approach and experience differs significantly from 64 and Sunshine, it's linear with no exploration and sandbox elements the only difference between the experience in 3DW and the Galaxy duo is that one has a flagpole at the end of the level the other has a star.

I dissagree on that one since super mario 3d world didn't have nearly as many bosses or puzzles. 95% of the levels just ended because you reached a certain point trough platforming your way trough it. In the galaxy games you also had to puzzle, race, fight mini bosses or do a quest for a third party with a star. 3D world is much more like a 3d super mario bros where you simply run towards the end of a level to end it and go to the next. You also need to visit the worlds of 3d world multiple times like in SM64 to collect everything.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

In 64 you revisit worlds to explore and mess around in order to find a star or a way to get to a certain star this isn't the same in Galaxy, in the latter you revist worlds just to receive the next linear task that is a significantly different approach and closer to 3DW. Only difference is that in 3DW they broke up all the puzzles and bosses and made them their own individual levels rather than the player going into the same level repeatidly.

Mario 64 and sunshine are my two favs.

I totaly agree with this. It always struck me as odd when galaxy fans complained about Super Mario 3d World not being like galaxy when, from a mario 64/sunshine fans position, 3d world was a hell of a lot like galaxy.

The Galaxy games also have levels that allow you to explore. Just saying.
But I agree they are more linear than 64 and Sunshine. That isn't necessarily a bad thing though.

Galaxy & 64 where the best mario games so thats a good thing.

Meanwhile the spiritual sequel to Banjo-Tooie remains unmade :(

I honestly didn't expect Nintendo to acknowledge this!
Really looking forward to play Odyssey, I've been hoping for a 64/Sunshine successor for years. I hope that they don't make the worlds too big though, this is an issue with many games. Bigger is not always better (we'll see how Breath of the Wild will do).
