Forums - Nintendo - Switch screen quality is "amazing"

Hard to transmit that information over video, but it seems to be quite well. I assume it is an IPS display.

That video unfortunately doesn't tell us much about how bright the screen actually can be,
as it's shot in a quite dimly lit room, but I hope Nintendo made sure the display is bright enough for outside-gaming.

Yeah, I was disappointed at the video, it hardly attempted to show multiple viewing angles including head-on.
Likewise it couldn't even give basic eyeball analysis of screen type e.g. IPS, or assessment of color gamut etc.
Alot of that is hard to assess directly thru video, especially with the lazy approach taken.
When the video advertises "screen is awesome!" but can't do basics to substantiate that it's kind of a waste.

People shouldn't care about the screen too much imo.

Perhaps, but the thread topic is screen quality, so that does tend to dominate discussion, shockingly enough. 8-O

Great to hear. One of my biggest complaints with the Wii U is the horrible screen quality. I mean I bought an Amazon tablet for 33 bucks and the screen quality is better than Wii U.

Even if that is the Switch's screen ppi it's right around or above tablets in the same price range!
Not to mention that most of those devices don't come close to having the same controller tech out of the box for dedicated gaming.

But as I stated a screen can be 720p but have more ppi there are more factors into people just hearing 720p and saying that's garbage...

Yeah dude, but you're not telling anybody anything that isn't common knowledge,
and seem to be avoiding normal objective comparisons that would be made when assessing any screen.
And then you for whatever reason bring the controllers into a thread dedicated to the screen.
If you aren't really interested in making comparisons and just want to bathe in "positivity"
DON'T START MAKING COMPARISION IN THE FIRST PLACE, because you end up looking stupid.

Well until any of us have actual hands on experience with the device it's pretty pointless to just compare just resolution alone to what screen technology actually works better. I've bought some bad tablets already where the screen resolution had absolutely nothing to do with the overall quality of the image it represented in the end.

It's not about being overly positive for the sake of glossing over it... People that have went in skeptical about the screen quality are actually raving about how nice games really look on the device! I brought up the controller tech because we all can't be that simple to expect Nintendo to put a very expensive display in the device and not factor in everything else when it device as a whole needs to sell for $300.

Nintendo needs them 3DS owners to switch over! They need them!

Switch will not replace the 3DS. It's just not that portable. I guarantee you everyone will still be carrying their 3DSes around at conventions and on train rides.

Minus the Joy Cons Switch is actually just about the same size as a 3DS XL/iPhone Plus/Galaxy Note. It is not a massive device, and can easily replace 3DS for a good portion of Nintendos user base. I think that 3DS will eventually be fully replaced by Switch in 2019 - 2020 when Switch Mini comes out with 7nm nvidia tech. Hopefully the Switch Phone will arrive then as well.

I think if you have followed any real first previews of the experience people got when capturing the device off screen, they've all stated that Nintendo has some pretty weird rules about what angles they would allow games to be captured in off screen!

You think so ? I talked about this a lot with a friend of mine today because imho considering you can put the Joycons in another pocket the 6.2 inches screen should be easy to fit in most pockets/bring around

Who's going to lug a Switch into the bathroom at work for a quick break? 3DS is easier to conceal and it turns off when you close it. Right back into your pocket. Who wants to bring a Switch onto a train and have someone steal it right out of their hands? It's just calling for attention at that size.

On the other hand, who would lug around a Nexus 6 or Iphone 7 anywhere for a quick break? Because that's basically the size of the Switch minus the joycons. Switch can be shut off or presumably be put into rest mode with the flick of a button. Be honest here, most people you see in public places or transit have nothing better to do than look at their phones or tablets when they have nothing to do. Most of these devices are more expensive than a small Nintendo handheld. A theif would always go for the Iphone/literally any other smartphone or tablet in plain sight before reaching for the Switch.

Yea, all the guy says is "it's amazing" several times ..

From what I see it's an IPS and that makes sense for a mobile device. VA has much better contrasts, but is still lacking in viewing angles (Samsung afaik proclaimed they solved that with their 2017 TV line-up, let's see about that).

In dark lighting situations and with brightly colored content pretty much every display made after 2010 looks "good".

Speaking of Samsung, they just announced that the Galaxy 8 will be 4K.
