So, the fact that Nintendo also overcharges for its AC adapter means that it isn't overcharging for the dock. The AC adapter and HDMI cable cost Nintendo a maximum of $2 combined. As for the USB-C to HDMI, these adapters cost as little as $13, probably less.

And I can't imagine that adding support for the HDMI port, and charging capabilities adds significant expense. I wouldn't be suprised at all if the total cost to manufacture the dock for Nintendo was less than $15.

That's no dock but a usb-c hdmi adapter, no power is transmited.

It's almost as if I covered that in my original post, but allow me to expand on that.  I haven't exactly torn apart a dock yet, but I don't think adding the power adapter, and a simple power managment solution to transform the incoming voltage into whatver the USB-C uses , and powering the USB-C connector is an expensive endeavour. Based on my experience working on my own little projects, this actually quite cheap. You're talking less than $5 in off-the shelf components at retail cost, and Nintendo would be paying far less than that.

The reason this topic got bumped was me earlier today.

I posted about seeing an article (also saw on amazon today deals) abou the PS$ stand being on sale form $26 to $16 dollars.

So lets round up for tax. Sony was selling a plastic STAND for $30. The stand did NOTHING that this dock can do. It has no electronics, no cords, no nothing. just a chunk of plastic to hold the PS4 upright. And Sony charges $30 for it.

What do you suppose that costs sony to make? 50 cents?

Honestly, the only overpriced controller is the X1. It's the same price as the DS4, but it doesn't have the following things that the competition does have:

- No gyroscope and accelerometer
- No internal battery: it still runs on freaking AA batteries. What is this, 2006?
- No NFC chip
- No HD rumble
- No touchpad

Does it have adaptor for headphones though? Because we all know that's the biggest justification for the high price of a controller, of course.

And what did I say in my reponse to you? Two wrongs don't make a right. Just because Sony is overcharging for a stand doesn't mean that it's acceptable for Nintendo to overcharge for anything. I've been around long enough to remember Sony taking a bunch of shit for selling the original PS3 without an HDMI cable. Nintendo is taking shit for this because almost every single accessory for the Switch is 20-50% more expensive than what many consumers would consider to be fair prices, especially considering the price of similar accessories from Sony and Microsoft.

TL:DR: If Nintendo was selling a Switch stand for $30, and pretty much all of their other accessories were considered to be reasonably priced, no one would really give a shit.

I don't think anyone is reasonably defending Nintendo.

Everyone knows that companies make their big dollars selling accessories for exuberant prices. The pointing out of "two wrongs don't make a right" was not defending, just proof that Nintendo is not some outlier. All companies grossly overcharge accessory prices, whether they are in the gaming business, cell phone business, tv business, ect. (I mean heck, go into a Best Buy and purchase a new TV. Then watch the salesmen try to convince you how the $100 HDMI monster cables are the ones you need). Or buy a new phone in a verizon store and go and look at the rack of accessories and their prices.

No one is defending Nintendo, we are just saying why make a big deal out of nothing new.

Guys, there is literally no way that all the "advanced tech" inside the controllers/joy-cons are jacking up the price. Normal controllers cost jack shit to make. Console manufacturers have notoriously high profit margins on accessories like controllers and stuff. Nintendo just decided to add an extra mark-up in addition to the already insane mark-up there is on official accessories. The dock really takes the cake though. It's literally just a piece of plastic with a few ports in it. Dafuq.

$49 for the Joy cons is cheap imo. $89 for the dock that comes with an hdmi cable and an adapter is also fair.

The only thing expensive imo is the pro controller.

Wut. You can get HDMI cables for like 5$.... A piece of plastic and two ports plus an HDMI cable is nowhere near worth 89$.

Also, I'm not sure if you noticed, but 49$ is for *one* joy-con, which is basically half a controller.

Except is not really half controller, remeber the wiimotes?  Those were 40$ each one, this is actually very similar, with the difference tha Joycons are way more advanced.

The dock is very expensive, but at least the console comes with one.
