And then Nintendo blew it. The WiiU opened up the cracks in my faith and liking for them that were patched in previous years. It was a disappointing console, and my least favorite of their's. A distinction I never expected the Gamecube to lose. Still it wasn't all bad, a handful of games were actually good, but really the only thing that stood out for memorability was it's primary launch-title;
Nintendoland
Nintendoland is probably the best mini-game compilation I ever played, beating even the good Mario Party games. It's mini-games were all clever, using old IP's and games, brushing them up and using the features of the console in a great way. My favorite was the Donkey Kong mini-game where you navigate a small cart through an obstacle course themed like the old Donkey Kong arcade game using the Gamepad's gyro-sensors. Nintendoland was really the only game I cared about sharing the experience with others.
There's other games though that I would deem noteworthy enough for once, simply because otherwise the list is so short. Mind if I were this lenient with my lists for NES, SNES, N64, GB and 3DS, they would have included much more games than they did because with these I'm including basically half my library. Those others are;
Mario Kart 8
Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario Maker
Mario Kart 8 is probably the best Mario Kart ever made when looked at it as objectively as possible. The new mechanic of anti-gravity was a great addition and it features pretty much only good tracks. My interest in it didn't last as long as they did with most other Mario Karts though. Similarly, Super Mario 3D World is in every way a better game than it's predecessor on 3DS and it's the best game on the system, but unlike that one World never amazed me. Land is better at being a 3DS game than World is at being a WiiU game. This was also the premier Mario game on the system, a far-cry in scope, imagination and ambition 64, the Galaxies and even Sunshine were, adding to the disappointment. It did spawn a cool spin-off in Captain Toad though, which finally gave Toad a real identity like Luigi's Mansion gave one to Luigi. Super Mario Maker was an idea that should have happened a long time ago, though with the Gamepad this was probably the most logical system to release it. It got me back to the system for quite some time, and I played it a lot in a short timespan. Sadly though the game is dead now. New levels won't get played or Starred anymore online, a testiment to the low level of hardware sales no doubt.
Lastly there were the Zelda remasters, and The Wind Waker did a good job at increasing my appreciation for the game. It's still my least favorite 3D Zelda game, but the HD version repaired any repairable mistake the original game had. Twilight Princess deserved more though, there is little reason to play that version over the original Wii and Gamecube versions. Hopefully Breath of the Wild when it finally releases repairs some of my feeling towards the WiiU, hopefully it goes out with a bang.
EDIT: It occurs to me that across these threads I have now included a pretty big pile of Mario games, and not that many Zelda games. Pretty hard to believe I'm actually not a Mario-freak and Zelda's my favorite franchise instead isn't it? But it's true nonetheless.
