Forums - Sales - Is Japanese Market really that bad?

Sure it`s not what it used to be on 80`s/90`s and PS2/GC era, but I`m starting to think those  JAPAN IS DEAD!  or SWITCH IS GOING TO MAKE JAPAN GREAT AGAIN (no attack to nintendo fans intended) an extremely exaggerated reaction to a market that is just past it`s prime time and is going through economical crisis. Actually, just everything in Japan is selling much less than it used to, entertainment in general is much lower, Japan is the second biggest market in the world for music and even there big artists are having trouble to reach the same numbers as before, with the excpetion of the AKB 48 fever ( but they are a very peculiar group and shouldn`t be seem as standard for anything).

So, considering Japan still can pull some good hardware numbers alone, not as good as before but good and still can push some games to the million mark with easy and that games are more expensive so it`s more revenue per copy than in the USA, it`s seems extremely exaggerated to say Japan is dead or that need to be saved for that matter.

It`s just a change of point of view that is necessary. Stop putting Japan as it`s own thing and consider the regions to be NA, Europa and Asia and put Japan inside the Asia basket. Like the new Yakuza that was considered a failure with pure Japanese sales but with total Asia sales it actually debuted better than the predecessors.

Not that Japan isn`t important, it`s just not that important, and it`s ok.

Well you saw the charts. The gaming market is seeing an exodus to the cancer known as mobile gaming...

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

Yes, it is. That's why Sony has moved their headquarters for the gaming division from Japan to the USA.

It doesn`t mean that Japan is bad, it just mean it makes the most financial sense to have it in USA. But what I mean exactly it`s not that isn`t much lower than it used to be, but even being lower, it isn`t a reason to say the region is dead. If it wasn`t for economical crisis and an aging population I would say it indeed is a crisis, but it`s not the case, gaming being lower isn`t an isolated fact.

"Is Japanese Market really that bad?"

It's not bad. They just prefer portable gaming more. It's called a cultural difference. Nothing wrong with that. There's nothing to "save."

Japan is the sole reason why the Xbox will never catch up with the PlayStation this gen, while it might not be doing as great as it did before....it's still on pace to beat the PS3 or at least match it.

for Nintendo's handhelds its not

for Sony and hardcore home consoles at this point? 100% yes. the PS1 and PS2 both sold incredibly well in Japan but the last few generations have been comparitively poor.

Nintendo's home console success in Japan has also decreased (although not really shocking this gen). Nintendo's handhelds seem to be the only thing still thriving

that said I think if Sony would focus a little more on Japan they could do better.

The Switch better knock it out of the fucking park or Japan is doomed to mobile.

The problem is that Japan has been going through a demographic and economic crisis for a while now, economically at least since the 90s which does not correlate with the sales of the PS1, PS2, DS, PSP and 3DS.

If the PS4 manages to match PS3 numbers and the Switch, 3DS numbers, it's still 30 million consoles sold. It's not bad but it's merely a shadow of its former self, mobile is king now.

Yes.

Pay attention pleb.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

What does any logical person expect from a quickly aging population.
