Forums - Nintendo - Which game is Super Mario Run for?

Pokemon Go was developed to give people a sample/demo in the hope of boosting sales of real Pokemon. The release of Pokemon Go saw sales of Omega/Ruby and X/Y go from a baseline ~25k and ~19k up to 130k and 77k respectively.

4 months later and Pokemon Sun and Moon had a record launch.

NES Mini gives people a sample/demo of nintendo IPs for noobs and a reminder for older fans who might not have played in a while.

4 months later and Nintendo Switch is released.

Super Mario Run (iOS) is released in Dec 2016 but what game is it intended to boost?

Obviously it should help any games already out and it won't do any harm to the recently released Mario Maker 3DS.

3D Mario on Switch (assuming launch game) is an obvious candidate but SMR isn't a good example of 3D Mario gameplay. Also, the Android version isn't ready yet. If Pokemon Go would have had a delayed release between iOS and Android surely they wouldn't have released Android-Pokemon Go before SuMo.

Could SMR-Android be releasing ~4 months before a yet to be announced 2D Mario game for Switch?

What will the gap be between the smartphone app and a full Fire Emblem/Animal Crossing?

Fuck, I hope you're right ;_;

Knowing Nintendo's insistence that 3D Mario is the main Mario (hahaha), they probably intend to boost sales of the 3D Mario game for Switch as the main goal.

- If Nintendo wanted to boost the game where you look at Mario's fat arse all day then ripping off Temple Run seems a wasted opportunity. Maybe they'll do a Temple Run-esque app for 2D Mario's release in another attempt to blur the lines.

A new 2D Mario shouldn't be expected before holiday 2017, so a four-month-gap is unrealistic; the Android version of SMR should arrive sooner.

-Part of me wonders whether they might just throw everything at Switch asap so they can take a year off again and 'give 3rd parties a chance'.

Animal Crossing can be expected to have a short gap between smartphone and main game (smaller than four months, actually), but Fire Emblem will be trickier because Fates was finished in mid-2015. Then again, Fire Emblem for smartphones might get delayed further and not be released before late 2017.

-There must be some method to the madness though. The apps are released when they are for a reason aren't they? Would they release an app after a new entry has already been released?

Well it's not about creating a demo of a specific game, it's about providing a sampling of the general type of gameplay (Pokemon is about catching Pokemon, Mario is about platforming) as a way to wet appetites and increase brand recognition and reserve and maintain mind share in between major productions. Pokemon Go plays *nothing* like real Pokemon besides the fact you catch Pokemon. But it made people want to experience the Pokemon IP in a more deep, meaningful way. Mario Run will be no different. So 3D Mario is likely the direct target.

However, Mario is also the Nintendo mascot. So Mario Run is also a good way for Nintendo to boost their own brand power in general in the lead up to the Switch.

The previous Pokemon's before Pokemon Go were 2 and 3years old. As great as boosting those games is, it's no accident that a new title was releasing in 4 months time. It seems a waste to not use the apps shortly before the release of a new entry. Surely that has the most impact.

I suspect Nintendo thought it would take a little longer for people to become aware of Pokemon Go.

I have several diagrams I'm working on. I need until tomorrow night. I think you might have something here. Or nothing. You never know what'll happen.

I'm not saying the timing was accidental, just that their mobile games don't have to resemble their console counterparts for the boost to work as Go, when you get down it it, is very very different from the mainline games.

And yes, I do believe there will be a Mario game in early 2017.  But Mario is also generally the Nintendo mascot.  So it can also be used to boost Nintendo itself

Could it just to be to boost their own profits?

Boosting Mario sales is definitely what they want to happen, but I don't think it's specifically linked.. If I had to choose I would say the new 3D Mario, but for the eventual 2D Mario as well

I'm pretty sure that both games are meant to make a good profit on their own, which they will do. Cross media promotion is a positive side effect.

I loved watching hole in the wall! And that is a tricky question!

OT: I can see Animal crossing releasing in 2017 or early 2018 because I felt like they were working a Wii U version of it but canceled it. And since there will be a Splatoon 1.5, The sequel of it will probably be in late 2018 or mid 2019.
