Well it's not about creating a demo of a specific game, it's about providing a sampling of the general type of gameplay (Pokemon is about catching Pokemon, Mario is about platforming) as a way to wet appetites and increase brand recognition and reserve and maintain mind share in between major productions. Pokemon Go plays *nothing* like real Pokemon besides the fact you catch Pokemon. But it made people want to experience the Pokemon IP in a more deep, meaningful way. Mario Run will be no different. So 3D Mario is likely the direct target.

However, Mario is also the Nintendo mascot. So Mario Run is also a good way for Nintendo to boost their own brand power in general in the lead up to the Switch.
