Knowing Nintendo's insistence that 3D Mario is the main Mario (hahaha), they probably intend to boost sales of the 3D Mario game for Switch as the main goal.

- If Nintendo wanted to boost the game where you look at Mario's fat arse all day then ripping off Temple Run seems a wasted opportunity. Maybe they'll do a Temple Run-esque app for 2D Mario's release in another attempt to blur the lines.

A new 2D Mario shouldn't be expected before holiday 2017, so a four-month-gap is unrealistic; the Android version of SMR should arrive sooner.

-Part of me wonders whether they might just throw everything at Switch asap so they can take a year off again and 'give 3rd parties a chance'.

Animal Crossing can be expected to have a short gap between smartphone and main game (smaller than four months, actually), but Fire Emblem will be trickier because Fates was finished in mid-2015. Then again, Fire Emblem for smartphones might get delayed further and not be released before late 2017.

-There must be some method to the madness though. The apps are released when they are for a reason aren't they? Would they release an app after a new entry has already been released?
