Better be optional... fuck these useless gimmicks like VR.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to have the screen function as a budget VR headset. VR is the kind of novelty that people want to try but probably won't pay a premium for.

That being said the system's specs and resolution make that a little doubtful.

Seem too big and too low res.
Maybe they need a solution that keeps the screen further from the eyes than current VR sets.
Maybe thats why they still not announced anything

Maybe they will only implement VR on the next revision in couple years.
A smaller screen, with more native resolution and power(maybe,equivalent with the power when docked)
Anyway, would be the most acessible way to enter in VR market.

It will probably use a portion of the screen and black out the rest. It can give a mobile phone like VR or a little better. I have some cool VR apps on my ASUS Zenphone Selfie.

That's awesome news if true. It will be my first step into the vr world without having to spend too much extra cash to buy the headset.

This is not something I could see Nintendo pursuing, especially since VR is still in its niche phase.

Nintendo could release a powerfult Switch Screen which can make the VR experience work or better. And it can make normal games better as well!
