Um, it's not a tablet, period. The Switch is not a touch-screen only device, and tablets don't come equipped with multifunctional controllers with a ton of face buttons.

yeah I don't know why people keep saying this, switch is not a tablet, the form factor looks like a tablet. But just like the xbox one is not a vcr and the ps4 pro is not a triple cheeseburger, the switch is not a tablet.

Nintendo will use their own OS... this was never in question.

proprietary OS, why would you think otherwise?

Pretty much this. I sincerely doubt Nintendo will leave their OS to someone else. Besides Nintendo makes solid OSes for their hardware. That isn't the issue. Even Wii U had a decent OS in spite of the hardware. The real issue is that its a tablet. Thanks to the form factor there will be sacriices to OS efficiency and how much it uses when it is playing games. But if anyone can figure out a way to make it fly it'll be Nintendo.

It's a proprietary Linux, the same OS that NES Mini uses. Mini is to monetise the R&D that went to Switch development (and to test it in a market).

In any event, why would the Switch not utilize a proprietary OS like every other Nintendo console has before it?  iOS obviously ain't happening, and Android would cause way too many compatibility issues.

Again, it's not strictly a tablet / mobile device.  This is like asking why PS4/X1 don't use iOS or Android.

I'm just pointing out, that Wii U was the first Nintendo console to have an operating system. The DS, Wii and 3DS have just firmware and a graphical shell to access individual software (that's running directly on the hardware).

No chance this going to happen but what I would love to see is dual OS.

When you start it up you get a option to either boot to Nintendo OS which would be focus around playing Nintendo games and other social things related directly to Nintendo games.

A console with an "other OS" option? That went so well with PS3 ;)

Slightly different then what I have in mind.  The PS3 had option for users to install linux on it.  The problem, if you believe sony is it caused security issues having a user installed OS.  Sony was not working directly with the creators of the OS's that was going on to there system.

What I would like to see is a partnership between Nintendo and Nvidia.  Nvidia in control of updates to there OS and Nintendo in charge of there but working togeather to pervent any security concerns/compatiabilty issues.  Acording to Nvidia (https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2016/10/20/nintendo-switch/) they already worked with Nintendo to optimize there OS to work with there hardware, I believe if there was a desire to work togeather to achieve what am saying it would be very doable.

For users when you first logon what it would look like is a choise between to applications (nvidia or Nintendo )

Oh, I thought this thread was gonna be about the games. Welp I've lost interest then. :L

One that doesnt have achievements or a unified account system that shares ownership of digital content to the account itself.

A Nintendo OS.

Hey that's not confirmed one way or the other yet!

Wii U had my favorite UI for the gen. Simple, fixed the awful friend code issue, fast, and never laggy

Much less of an security issue than PSN... Anyway, the issue was that the optional OS made it possible to run unlicensed (=you don't need to pay royalties to Sony) games on PS3.

It's a tablet that has a dock and controller peripherals by accident.

You can buy a Surface with keyboard, mouse and dock, yet it still is a tablet. Weird stuff.

Really? I have seen a few Surface devices in stores, but never have considered them as tablets (this is the first time I think about it, though). They do seem to be be these hybrid devices you see everywhere these days.
