Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Laura Kate Dale: Nintendo Switch Dock Increases Performance, Not Via Extra Hardware

And quite likely, the more demanding games will run sub-720p in mobile mode.
Honestly these days, games that push GPU to limit just need to implement dynamic resolution.

Everybody talks about down-clocking, but there is also option to turn off parts of GPU in mobile 720p mode.
Down-clocking has limits/decreasing returns, but entirely shutting down cores would yeild solid power savings.
If you need an analogy, think of newer car engines which deactivate cylinders when they don't need the power.

This news/rumor does make me think:
Will people hack together a mobile cooling attachment that allows higher performance? (variable FPS/supersampling)
The issue there is not achieving the same level of cooling, nor even making the system think it's docked,
but in how the system would adapt to still only having 720p screen for output (if docked/1080p is hard-correlated)
There would need to be flexibility in system, or a SW hack, to enable supersampling or "720p docked mode" (FPS boost).
Honestly, the latter seems most likely for Nintendo or devs to enable, similar to multiple performance modes for PS4Pro.
Because it would still be useful for those using in normal modes, i.e. when connected to TV.
Supersampling when docked to TV would only have value with 720p or less TV, and even then TV could do it itself.

I doubt the validity of these rumors since a guy from Foxxcon made pretty clear the console gains no additional power from the docking station.

I hope this is true, but I doubt the validity.

the guy from foxxcon said that the dock doesn't have any extra component to make the switch run better, like extra gpu. This report is about the switch being downclocked when you're using the portable mode and then running at full speed via usb c when the tablet is docked. The dock just have another fan, not extra processing hardware.

He said, "ITS JUST AN OUTPUT".

He also said, "NO FAN"

Again, I hope this is true, but I remain doubtful.

I'll have to trust laura here, every rumor by her is true.

Honestly, there is little functional difference between having a 2nd fan in dock, and running the same fan at higher speed.
In fact, the portable unit could have a built in fan, but not actually use it in mobile mode.  Or have 2 fans, but only use 1.
( to save power, and for noise reasons when it is being held a foot from your face, vs. in a dock 6 feet away from you)

Just suggesting a way the two leaks/rumors are more compatable than they seem at first.

I assumed the dock increased it's performance/power in some form or another, so that's good :p

By the way, I do not have a link but shortly after the Switch reveal, didn't Nintendo themselves say this was not what was possible with the docking station?

they said "the main function of the dock is to connect the console to the tv"

Hopefully they implement a solution that offers us, the consumers both flexability and choice.

Supersampling would be... Super.

If it were to give a boost to the resolution of the console, would that not be considered a, "main function" to you and Nintendo?

That would be an unheard of feature (comparing it to laptops which do not boost resolution when you plug it into a power source is not parallel) in video gaming or even electronics, after all.
