Oh, seiyuus just mean voice actors in Japanese.

Well Im sure they get paid to do the signings, radio shows and live performances. If they dont get paid for something they do, then I would agree with you that they need to have a better deal.

They do. My main point was that Japanese voice actors/actresses aren't paid just for voice acting, but a conglomorate of doing multiple things.

Yeah, but the article makes it sound as if what he's saying is somehow an affront to the striking actors. I don't see what the two things have to do with each other. As if it's the actor's fault that some totally unrelated job is badly paid.

Well, that may just be Polygon being Polygon. But when everyone else is rallying behind the union it is kind of conspicuous that he would say this. Of course he's not blaming the actors who want more money and better conditions, but he does seem to be putting into perspective what they do.

Well it is all blown out of proprotions. Brandon (ex gametrailers now easy allies) wife is a voice actor and he read the demands in a podcast. Basically the strike is against a small number of companies big two culprits are EA/Activision were the demands got worse and when you have people who have to do four hour screaming sessions where they pass out/lose their voice or even cough up blood after a session you will get a strike. The financial demand is pretty low, in worst cases companies have to pay a bonus of 500$ on average to a voice actor when a game sells an amount of copies...  Probably would be a combined 25.000$ bonus for the last Call of duty release...

I agree that the demands were all pretty reasonable. Even the amount of residuals was surprisingly reasonable... for now, although I can see why the gaming companies wouldn't want to give in on that one because it just opens the door to demands for more and more down the road.

But on the working conditions aspects I'm with them 100%. There's nothing in there that should be concerning to the publishers that a simple NDA wouldn't cover.

While I don't agree or disagree, - I do think he has no real "dog in this fight".

He is a very famous voice actor that has no trouble getting jobs and I'm sure is very heavily paid. He is the 1% as far as voice actors go.

I believe people are striking for the "regular" voice actor. Not that ones doing 14+ games a year.

Agreed.

Well thats great. If that becomes a thing in the west, then good for VAs here.

Yeah but that is Japan, it is the country where an animator who works 6 days a week and +10 hours a day gets a salary that is hardly more than 800$ a month.  It is very heart breaking to watch Shirobako (that is about the life of people working in the anime business). When you see those characters have parents who send them vegetables and they buy 1$ micro wave dishes not because they want to but because they can't afford more;...Well that is a total different discussion.

I think the only voice actor that deserves to be paid the big bucks would be H. Jon Benjamin. Everyone else is a nobody compared to him.

I disagree with that wole heartedly. Quite a few folks are up there with him....and even better. Including the legendary Frank Welker and even Tara Strong.  Troy Baker is another one along with Dave Wittenberg. Not to mention Steve Blum. Scratch what I said earler...there's a LOT of folks better than Jon Benjamin.

Did I miss some sort of sarcasm or "the epicness of" banter here?

I was just talking out of my ass.  I don't think video game voice actors deserve a shitload of money but they should get enough for a decent living.  Sorry I just don't put that much value on voice actors.  Hell, I hardly even care about most star actors in movies besides a few.

He's right. When it comes to residuals, there is no way that voice actors deserve that. They aren't the stars of the show. I'm all for improved working conditions but they need to lose the arrogant mind-set that they hold the same relative importance as an actor in a film or television series.

Also, I've read a few people say something like, "all the millions a game makes goes to the fat cats in charge," which is just silly. As with most industries, most of the revenue is rolled right back into production. Why is that incredibly important? Because that revenue is used to make more games.

Who?  What does he do,  never heard of him

Does the voice for Bob in Bob's Burgers (Fox) and Archer in Archer (FX).  Also, did a few other voices such as Coach McGuirk in Home Movies.

Easy for him to say as a big name. It would be like Brad Pitt saying actors have no reason to strike and that their work wouldn't exist without writers and camera people.
