Forums - Gaming - Can someone please explain to me why a lot of games are cheaper physically then their digital counter parts on black Friday?

There are quite a few reasons why. We don't know the flexibility that retailers have when pricing digital content because in every case the retailer hasn't purchased the game beforehand. If you understand this, you see how futile this comparison is. The store isn't selling you merchandise it has in its own stock.

Another issue is that because there is only really one source of of digital games per console. All digital PS4 games are only available through download on PSN. When a retailer discounts a digital title, that discount comes diectly from the platforms own digital store because Amazon doesn't actually have anything in stock to discount.

That's why I buy digital games from last gen. Always have great sales on them bitches. Next half gen, I'll start buying the cheap digital of this gen.

There's a limited amount of physical storage space, and there's very little competition for digital games on consoles. Basically there's a lot of pressure to sell physical copies quickly but not much pressure to do the same with digital copies.

Try buying in Key Stores. Mafia 3 for 18 bucks, Dishonored 2 for 25 bucks, all good. Never buy directly from steam. for Xbox, there also really good deals at keyshops, like Master Chief Collection for 8,99. If you're on PlayStation though, you're out of luck. =/

^ Thanks for educating us.

I always thought that physical was often cheaper, due to the retailers wanting to get them out and make some sort of money on them.... Since you know.... They actually paid for those games.

But the storage space in warehouses and shelves, makes a whole lot of sense as well.

Yeah, files on a Harddrive at PSN EU/US/Jap will never cost the same as the warehouse space required to hold a single title around the globe, especially if it's a title which looks to be selling slowly, stores just can't pay to keep onto copies of games which are destined to waste space for them and lose more money long term.

And you're welcome! Unlike OP who hasn't returned to read his thread has just ran off with the points earned from asking the question lol.
