If the Switch takes off, I can see them doing something similar.

Not a chance. Think abiut the staple console games. COD, GTA, Mass effect, Witcher.....etc. And the direction their first oart software has been going: GoW, Horizon, GEoW, uncharted..... To make hardware like the switch and to run any of those games would result in an expericne lesser than what we currently have.

Those games will (can)not come to the switch. And 60M string and growing market in just 3 years makes it clear there is a market for games like that.

Why must they have their own unique prototypes?

They are both working on 4k and VR.

Why would they skip that to work on the "concept" of a handheld console? They are two very, very different routes with almost no comparability.

Why would MS/Sony work on motion control?

They are both working on HD and online services.

I know this isn't a fair comparison given how much more important HD and online were compared with 4K and current-gen VR.

Nov 2016 - NES outsells PS1 (JP)

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

This is like asking "what will USA do to counter Costa Rica?", Costa Rica doesnt even have an army, that simple...

"We all make choices, but in the end, our choices make us" - Andrew Ryan, Bioshock.

Sony will counter it with the ps vita

First beacon of change? I would say VR was the first beacon this particular gen. Also, until/unless the Switch is an overwhelming success you wouldn't see any real reaction from either Sony or MS.

And how did that go? abandoned quite quickly - and with a lot of regret.  You could make an argument that the kinect 2 damaged the xbox one and is one reason the xbox one is so far behind.

So why would either of them want to make that mistake again?

even nintendo abandoned motion gaming. Then pushed for touchscreen vonsole gaming and didnt even support it in some of their games.

some people just don't get that not all kinda different is good.

In other words, do you think Microsoft and Sony have any intention of being the leaders of change in the new era? Or will they purposely intend to follow suit?

Whether the Switch will be a succeess or not is still very much a question. Let alone if it starts anything that can be considered an era.

If the Switch becomes mega successful, they may do something to immitate that formula. If not, they'll likely do nothing.

technically all Sony has to do is really push for Improved remote play features within the PS4os and release a remote play app for all phones. Dropping the remote play stream quality donwn to 480p/720p which will in itself be downsampled from 1080p/4k would make for a very efficient and bandwidth light stream.

Boom, portable home console.

They won't care.

And it's hilarious that you think Nintendo are market leaders.

Like they didn't care about Wii? :3

I guess Kinect and PlayStation Move are just mere coincidence.

Or like they didn't care about Wii U? :3

I guess Xbox's smartglass (could  be used as a second screen) and Vita as a second screen to PS4 are just coincidences then!

If Sony/MS release a new peripheral in the spirit of NS, I guess it'll be just another big coincidence! ^^

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

We dont even know if it will be a success yet

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

I dont think Sony and Ms need to do anything. After the failure of the Wii U, the inus is on Nintendo to prove they can compete. And so I think both Sony and MS will adopt a wait and see attitude. If the slswitch proves very successful Then I think they may consider a similar hybrid device for the next gen. But their sales continue to do well they may not even bother. It really is all up to the Switch and Nintendo.
