Forums - Sony - Has Sony kept their promise of PS3 10 years lifespan?

The idea that third party support does not equal main company support is remarkably short-sighted. Everyone is aware that a third party dev can't release a game on a console without agreements, permission, etc etc, yes?

Putting contracts in place that allow for games to release into the 10th year of the console lifecycle, is support. Putting out their own games, annual sports game or any other, is support. Continuing to allow for online functionality, is support. Continuing to put out games for the system via their paid online service, is support.

Yes, this can and does apply to both PS3 and X360. Both consoles are getting supported into their second decade now. Both companies said at the beginning they intended to do so. The only thing that would've stopped it from happening would've been consumer rejection of their products. Same thing will happen with ANY content creator in any medium. You support it and it stays viable, they will support it.

Said in an interview one time that the 360 has a lifespan into 2015 thanks to Natal (Kinect), nothing regarding Sony whatsoever.

You do realize Nintendo supported more than one platform for a decade well before Sony ever did, yes? Wouldn't that make it a Nintendo strategy that Microsoft is supposedly copying? Also, what about the PS Vita? How can it be some grand Sony strategy if it only applies to certain platforms? The Vita proves that this idea of 10 year cycles that you have is crap. To put it simply, Sony is still supporting the PS3 because there is money in it. If there weren't money in it, they'd have moved on. Again, like the Vita. There was money to be made with the 360 a decade into its life, so MS supported it. Hell, according to the criteria in this thread, they still support the 360 eleven years after release. Why? There's money to be made. With the Xbox, they were losing money, so it was different. Again, like the Vita. If there were no money to be made on the PS3, they'd have moved on. Like they did with the Vita :)

As for the topic, whether they support it or not depends on your definition of support. Have they released anything other than MLB, a yearly sports game? I honestly don't know, I ran away from the PS3 OS as fast as I could once the new consoles came out. That and putting games on sale is enough for some, probably not for others. I think both Sony and MS are doing a fine job of still keeping gamers on their old platform engaged, with sales, a game every now and again, and "free" games on PS+/XBLG. Nintendo did have the Nintendo Selects push this year but other than that have not done much.

Forza is an annual sports game, have it launched for X360 this year?

Forza is a sports game. Forza Horizon is not. Neither are annual, because they come out every other year. And no, Horizon 3 did not release on 360 this year.

long live to ps3!

Today is 10 years since its release in NA, so yes, new games are still releasing for the PS3. We don't talk about it as much because the market has moved forward, but yes, that console is still very much alive and still supported by Sony.

Is Sony still putting software on the PS3?

Go home with your console warrior bullshit listwars crap, seriously. I said that the main support comes from 3rd party, not from Sony themself. I don't say they don't support it but the support is basically just keeping the status quo in terms of online features. They are just not shutting down servers. And even if, of course publishers will still release games for that console.

I say that this is a kind of support that isn't anything to be excited about. "Hey, it still works!" is basically it, in my opinion.

No. You said that "Sony are not actively supporting it" even though they've released numerous big games for it after the launch of PS4 and still release their MLB games for it. If you had said that "the main support comes from 3rd party" I wouldn't raise a single one of my two fat eyebrows.

Because honestly walsufnir, my good man, what 10 year old console has ever gotten the majority of its new games from its manufacturer 3 years after the launch of its successor?

I wonder why you won't answer this walsufnir.

yes. It is not a dead system. a casual gamer can stick with it and be happy.

I just upgraded to PS4 Pro, so I am selling my PS4 to my brother for 100 with 2 games. He was still using PS3 and was happy enough with it.

I would say a pretty big YES. PS3 still got AAA games for a good time after PS4 release, and is still getting some good games for this day, not the top-notch AAA games, but sport games and some medium-tie games are still being released. And stilll will have an extended lifetime, like sport games and lower budget rpgs, and Persona 5 will be the last game I play on my PS3. And still a very competent media center with BD ( no one cares anymore, but it`s there) and YouTube and Netflix, I believe my PS3 will have a better after-life after I get my Ps4 than my ps2 had when i got the ps3.

Yeah, barely anyone doubted that to begin with. But at the release of PS3 as Sony made this promise, some people thought it would mean the PS4 would not release before 10 years later. That was obvious bull, but some still believed that.

I still turn mine on and buy games for it (albeit heavily discounted on PSN). 7th gen games still look great!

Plus, it's the best media player on consoles imo. Better than the Xbox One and PS4!

So we can conclude that it isn't just because the series is anual it will be released as first party on older gen 10th year. So does that mean Sony supports PS3 and MS doesn't? Or do we need to list all 1st party games released per year on each platform to see who supported better?
